I have just stripped the bike down for restoration and I noted that the cradle face which abuts the spindle and seal is pitted and not a smooth machined finish to the full extent of the bush and seal.
The spindle hole is chamfered at the end which looks right then there is a smooth flat area of about 8mm wide then it pits which is more to where the oil seal would flush to it. Concern is seal may not be effective if it is to hold the oil in place.
Just wondered if anyone has had same issue and how it was overcome hopefully I don't need a new cradle.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Best Regards
Stuart

Hi Tony,
Never added a photo and keeps saying file too large.
Its the interface between the gearbox cradle and the swing arm seal and bush.
Part numbers 06-5140, 5229 and 5227.
Cradle metal has rust pitting so concern seal may not be effective.
Bush face is reasonable but some pitting will be under part of it.

Dear stuart, have come acr…
Dear stuart,
have come across this, I cleaned surface up of cradle with a 'flapper disc' on angle grinder, taking off bare minimum. thought I would then have to shim out bushes to take up any increase in end float. However found that new seals from RGM were slightly thicker than original ones and as they fit behind bush they took up all float and needed small amount removing from bush itself to allow assembly. so don't throw away old seals you may need them to compare with new ones if it won't go back together!
regards Martin

Hi Martin,
Thanks, that`s interesting so have retained one of the old bushes and seals.
I think after blast and painting the surface at seal position will probably be OK.
The seal seems to me to be needing to be thicker as the bush seems to project more than the seal.
