Hi all anyone know anything about gearbox numbers. My domi 99 is 1960 the gearbox number is N16170 wondered if anyone new the year of this gearbox. The reason I am asking is because the end cover must be incorrect because the clutch cable enters wrongly.Secondly if the rotary plate for the breather is incorrectly fitted in camshaft could this cause the breather to empty the oil tank very quickly ie 20 miles.thanks

It sounds like the right gearboxc - "N" for Norton as opposed to one of the other AMC bikes but the cover, or "end plate" as you call it, could be from an AMC model. I.e. not right for your 99. The rotary plate on the end of the cam only fits by its lugs engaging in the recesses at the end of the cam - not possible to fit it incorrectly as far as I know. It could be the stationery plate in the crankcase that's wrong, broken or missing. Someone more knowledgable than me might be able to tell you whether this would cause the problem you have.

Good luck! Lionel

Send an email with your gearbox number to the NOC Librarian, Chris Streather. He will probably be able to date it for you. My datafiles puts itas pre 1958. In which case it is an AMC 1 box. But after 60 plus years many of the parts could have been changed.
