Gear problem

Forums

Difficult to engage 1st when standing still. Makes a graunching noise but will go eventually or down to 2nd and then back to 1st ok. No problems when moving.

Can I adjust it?

(only had the bike 2 days after a rebuild so has a few teething problems) and also my first classic bike...

Any advice appreciated.

1) Who adjusted the clutch?

2) Have you looked in the manual which I know you have?

You need to spend more time with this bike. Do a tune-up. Make all adjustments. Check all oil levels.

You cannot just jump on and ride an un-examined bike. That is a recipe for misery and disaster.

...but welcome to the fold! If the clutch isn't releasing smoothly it could be various things. Wrong cable adjustment, uneven tensions on the three clutch springs...these old bikes do work well and were all normal in their original day. It'll be worth adjusting everything to the book. You can also look forward to the pleasure of trying to keep some oil in the primary chain case - but look on the message history here for advice on that exhausted topic!

Hello if your motorcycle misses the dd gear some times its a weak spring in the camplate plunger, it fits under the gearbox , or a selector spring, in the out cover,

has for Primary Oil only ues the right stuff for the job or you end up with contaminated clutch plates and clutch slip, I use LUCAS PRIMARY CLUTCH OIL has Used by Harley Davidson , will not let your clutch slip and its helps with cooling the right oil for clutchs , and I seal the back of the rubber band with High Temp Black silicone, and the face side of the rubber band I use Morris waterproof High Temp Grease , its will not let you nice Lucas oil out and drip all over the place, yours Anna J

Presumably this bike did not come cheap!. Since it was sold as "Rebuilt" you are entitled to expect the minor bugs to have been sorted. Your first step should be to get in touch with the seller and ask, politely, for his assistance.

Apart from not so minor bugs that you do notice, it makes you wonder if there is something really serious that this disreputable rebuilder got wrong and if you will soon get a nasty surprise. It is important to have an honest chat with him.
