My 55 ES2 is fitted with a Mod 77 g/box (GB8 rather than G102). I understand that they both have the same width at the top. Nevertheless I simply cannot get the gearbox out. It seems to be jammed between the retaining brackets at the top. I dismembered the box so it's now empty, also removed all the primary side. I cannot see how they is enough room - even if I could moved it? Help!

I'll have a go at a pic tomorrow, Ian. It's stuck between the upper brackets.

For those of you waiting with baited breath for the second boot to drop here it is. Sorted!
I removed the battery and holder, loosened off the upper bracket retaining bolts on the n/s, removed the oil tank (for visual access) and could then see that the top of the g/box was striking a mound of metal behind the o/s upper bracket which hold the bolt that retains the p/chain adjuster (looks like a pipe clip). Once everything was loosened the g/box suddenly became free and dropped out. Not quite as described in the Handbook (simply "twist a/clockwise and remove from the o/side) but hey ho! It's now sorted. Hi George, can you post a photo of where it's stuck? I suspect it will be the cross brace between the swingarm pivots. In which case it is stand spring off (sorry!), rear chain guard off (sorry again!) and then remove the cross brace. I think you have the smaller oil tank and no tool box so they shouldn't get in the way. Taking the cross brace off is no bad thing anyway as you will be able to check the state of the bolts on the near side, the heads can get chewed by a slack chain.
Cheers, Ian McD
