ES2 centre stand

When loaded up with luggage my 1951 ES2 is a nightmare to get on the stand. Has anyone had any experience fitting a later stand like used on many BSA and Triumph twins (and maybe Commandos, I have no experience with these!) My dad has a 650 Triumph which is considerably bigger and heavier than the ES2, yet you stand on the pedal sticking out from the stand and it just rolls on with no effort at all! I'll fit a side stand but I'm not overly confident in these...

Any thoughts? Or do I just need to go to the gym a bit more?

I have the same problem with my plunger ES2, I thought I was just feeling a bit weaklaugh it must be impossible with the bike loaded up. I was advised to grab the frame tube lower down with my right hand, which did help a bit. Leaning it against a tree is a much easier optionenlightened

I hold the stand down with my left foot, position myself towards the rear of the bike and pull back and up with the mudguard loop. (52 ES2) John

Thanks for the responses.

John: Thats how I do it most of the time and its fine, however with panniers on I cant stand close enough to get my left foot on the stand and reach round the back without leaning over the top a long way... All becomes a bit of a contortionistact...

Stuart:I was looking at modifying my stand, do you have any pictures?

Me tothen Itore 3 musclesin mylower back.... Theproblem is they are a dead weightlift; no mechanicaladvantage to "rock it over".After a long run in the rainand an invitingpub toget into,Ididaquick lift onmyloadedCS1 andinstantlyI screwed myTTtrip!

An extension (Backwards) tothe side spike tostep onand putsome weight downwards istheright way todo it ,but thestands are notsorobust and(when loaded) distort especially onunevenground.

With regards toa propstand; when you alight a loadedbike it's always good to have a prop standout; just incaseyou catch afoot onyour baggage,slip on loose/wet/fuelsoaked/ground,oryourlegs aresonumb theydon'twork like they did when you goton.

I've decided to put a lifting handle on it so I have something a bit higher up than the frame tube to grab, I'll probably run it from the bottom of the saddle spring to the top of the plungers, similar to a plunger BSA.

I'm also considering adding a pedal/lever to the stand itself, but what are the stands made from? And will the heat of welding make the stand soft/brittle or anything else that might result in the bike ending up on its side? Any experiences (good or bad) with this?
