There is a 17 tooth engine sprocket on my '54 ES2 but I think it should be bigger. Does anybody know the correct size.

Yes, 20T is standard but you can go higher. For relaxed cruising you could go 21T. My poor Man's Manx has a 22T on the engine but that's something else.
Don't forget there are 3 different offsets on the singles so match up with your 17T. All sprockets available from RGM.

I had a 22 on my '51 ES2 when I first put it on the road, I found that it was reluctant to pull up hills when loaded with luggage. With no luggage it comfortably cruised at 60-65.
I then went to a 20T as thats what the book said it should be. It's much better now, cruising speed is more 55-60 but it will do that anywhere, even when carrying luggage and going up hill. The acceleration is better too so for most of the riding I do its fine. If anything its a little on the low side, I reckon it would pull a 21T so maybe thats a job for the winter .

Agreed Andy, a 21T sounds a good compromise.
I have the std 20T on my ES2 big bore but with a 20T on the gearbox, which is a slight compromise but makes it faster than standard all the same.

Hi Bill,
ES2's came standard with a 20 tooth engine sprocket and a 19 tooth gearbox sprocket. Like earlier commentors said, running a 21 tooth sprocket will make it a bit less "busy" at cruising speeds. I have a 19S bumped up to 626cc and it pulls a 21 tooth gearbox sprocket and 20 tooth engine sprocket with ease. Granted, it has a bigger engine but the taller gearing really keeps down the shakes. Norton singles seem to be able to pull fairly tall gearing without much discomfort.

Albert

Hi guys I know it's an ol…
Hi guys I know it's an old thread but hoping for some helping a complete douchebag and have little to none knowledge. . I have a model 50 wideline featherbed( frame was originally from a 59 Donnie ss) and it's running a 17tooth engine sprocket. Im looking to up this to a 19tooth as 1st and second gear are next to useless lol. However I can't seem to find anywhere that has engine sprockets. Let alone one to do the job I need. Have tried 'andover' , 'burton' , 'norvil' and British bike Austriaif anyone can please help

RGM list them, with a choice of teeth and offset. Search their site for sprocket. https://www.rgmnorton.co.uk
