Electronic ignition for Dominator

Has anybody tried the Powerspark ignition system in an 18D2 distributor? It retains use of the bob weight assembly and is around £45 (which is attractive to me!)

Hello Alan,

Haven't used one on a bike yet, but have converted a few cars using Lucas 25 & 45 type distributors. It is a good basic way of getting rid of points & condensor but the distributor needs to be in good unworn condition as any wear in the bearings allowing the shaft to move sideways (wobble) can result in the magnetic trigger ringrubbing the pick-up & any wear or damage in the advance bobweight pivots/springs seem to show up morewith this system & as has been hinted at,I believe itwill only work on 12V neg earth, so you may have alterations to make there. That said, if you make sure all is reasonably as it should be, it's a worthwhile conversion, starting is generally improved, idle is much smoother & usually the engine runs a tad cooleras you've eliminated uneven points gaps & consequently uneven timing accross the cylinders. Please remember all this is based on my experience with 4 & 6 cylinder water cooled engines, but don't see why similar benefits shouldn't be enjoyed by our humble air cooled twins.

All the best for now, Tim

Hello Tim How about working your magic on a Lucas K2fC and getting rid of the points in there but keeping the best bit self generating bit of the magneto then we will have a magneto with no points to play with a better running engine , fit it and forget it ! it all works well ! Yours Anna J

I have found that the points will last a very long time if the old Lucas condenser is replaced with a modern ceramic capacitor. As always, Irecommendthe one from Brightspark, it installs under the points plate & works a treat, over 1,000 sold & no in use failures!!And at a price of around GBP 13, why not try one? It allows you to use all the original parts, but with super reliability. Of course there are other things in a mag that should be checked out if you are rebuilding one, like the armature, bearings, magnet strength, slip ring, brushes, etc. Brightspark is listed on the service page in the electrical section on our NOC site, or see: http://www.brightsparkmagnetos.com/
