Electra in spring time

Forums

I thought I would attach a couple of pictures of my Electra resting amongst the bright green leaves of the Somerset trees, vibrant blue of the Bluebells and rich red of Campion during my long test ride after it's gearbox, clutch and starter rebuild and accurate ignition timing.  Starting, running and changing gear really well, 99% of oil leaks cured, performance, tickover, power and smoothness much improved thanks to Pazon electronic ignition timing now spot on to correct 30 deg BTDC using a strobe.

My only minor niggle is a tiny weep from the Primary side filler plug.  I just cant get a perfect seal with the rubber 'O' ring  from NOC spares which has replaced the red fibre ring used originally.  It distorts when the plug is tightened down and despite experimenting with different tightness I cant get a 100% seal I used to get with the original washer.  I have searched high and low on the internet and can't find the correct size of red fibre sealing washer.  Does anyone know of a source or solution?

Enjoy this beautiful weather and safe riding - I will be out again tomorrow making the best of what is an outstanding and much under rated Norton and a joy to own.....most of the time!

Cheers.  Nick

Looking good Nick, I have similar scenery! Im also impressed with your stand, it lifts the front wheel!
Dan

Thanks Dan, it's gradually getting there!  As for the centre stand the later version used on the Electra with the extension isn't perfect but I find it  transforms getting the bike onto the stand more easily.  As you say it lifts the front or back wheel off the ground better depending on slope and loading.  I've just fitted one to my Navigator I'm rebuilding with the stainless steel spacers the club sells and it is definitely sits at a better angle when down.  It will be interesting to see how it sits with the engine and wheels on.  Enjoy the Devon countryside in this glorious weather.   I was down on the river Dart over the weekend and the county is looking fantastic!

Nice bike, lovely photo Nick.

Been out on my Electra too. The riders on their modern machines all comment on the beautiful 60's soundbeat behind me. Grateful thanks to Pazon.

Glad you found the club centre stand with lever is satisfactory.

Your stand looks to have been fitted to a frame with good stops and the spacers you mention. Like mine, the front wheel is in the air. Correct length shock absorbers too.

I hope this gives a few clues to those who find the stand does not lift the bike enough, is difficult to put on the stand, or find the lever arm end sits on the tarmac with the feet.

Bluebells great in Yorkshire too.

Calendar contenders?  The countryside is bursting in to life now, maybe a little rain to help things along?  I find the Navigator perfect for the quite country lanes, things get a bit frantic flogging it along the busy A roads.  Already have a "scenic" route planned to get to Andover for ANIL's open day in a couple of weeks.

The stand, does it allow the bike to sit on either front or back wheel like BMW's did/do?

Fantastic photos of Lightweights bathing in the Spring sunshine.  Here's my offering, taken on Monday on the B4225 between Bibury and Burford.

Just been out to the garage. I incorrectly stated above that the Electra rests on centrestand with front wheel in the air.

My front wheel is firmly on the ground. The rear wheel is in the air and it takes a fair push down on the luggage rack to raise the front wheel.

I've just checked, mine is the same Peter.  As I suspected the reason my front wheel was off the deck yesterday was the slope and weight of tools in my little tool bag behind the seat.   Off for another run to make the most of this cracking weather!   The more I ride the Electra the more I am impressed.  I live my Navigator but the extra cc's and torque, indicators, starter and better rear brake tip the balance!  N

Is it possible to swap out the Navigator rear wheel and swinging arm in favour of the bigger brake on the Electra?  No doubt this has been discussed before. What are the pros and cons?

Probably getting a bit off topic Nick. Better to start a new thread.

To give yourself an idea of what is involved in fitting Electra rear end to a Navigator, compare the parts lists for swinging arm, rear brake, axle, spacers, torque arm, spokes, rim. Money spent on these two parts lists might stop you chasing a very expensive path, which could come to a dead end if you can't find a few key items.
