Electra silencers

Forums

Moving swiftly on.... the silencers fitted to my Electra are circular in cross section and are approximately 3" diameter. The kickstart fouls the RHS silencer even though the pipe is as far inboard as possible. I may have the wrong silencer mounts as well but even if these were different there's no way the silencer would move inboard enough for clearance.

I'm sure I've seen some reference to a more oval section component - should I have these? And are they slimmer? Armours etc do list various alternatives but without quoting the crucial dimensions. My local bike shop also has what look like the oval section ones but are out of stock. https://www.classicbikeshop.co.uk/norton-dominator-jubilee-navigator-silencers.html

Of course once I've completed the rebuild the kickstart will be merely ornamental.......

Yes they all do that, the silencers pick up 'kick start scars' the 'cigar' silencers are 3" but the 'kidney' oval ones are a fraction wider. Fiddling with brackets and pipes can make it work, but the parts soon migrate back and interfere with one another.
When you find an answer Ian let me know.

As the silencer bears scars from before I had it I may "relieve" it slightly (ie dent it with an old fork stanchion). But I'll stop worrying about that for the time being.

These "cheroot" silencers are made with the wrong dimensions and mounting points that should be further forward on the silencer . Allowing the silencer to be fitted further to the rear . It causes the same issue when fitted to the 60  Dominators . where you have to dent the silencer to pass the frame . Exhaust pipes are also a poor shape .

..of brackets and spacers I've achieved a position where the kickstart just clears the silencer. I've also moved the kickstart out so its outer edge is flush with the outer end of its spindle - probably 1/16" or so further out than it was before. It's a shame tere are some existing scrapes. I expect everything will migrate so they're all in contention again before long.

I find that early kick starts, fitted with the correct plain shank bolt, will not move further outboard than your setting, Ian. The bolt sits in the groove midway down the spline.
The pattern kick-start being sold now are very good. Slightly longer by 40mm.

But,,,, the bolt and bolt hole are further from the spline centre. It is possible to remove the kick-start with the bolt in place. Or presumably to fall off in extremis.

In my experience the kick-start bolt needs tightening from time to time, and when not fully secure, the kick-start always migrates outward on the spline.

You should be OK with your setting but check the bolt regularly for tightness.

All your problems sound so familiar.

...same both sides. My 1964 Navigator also has them - and you can see the kickstart 'dink' in them. (In addition to the weld done while abroad).
Although these silencers sit further back (the brackets they hang from are tilted back), the modern ones are not exact copies of the originals. The originals tapered out more slowly - thus missing the kickstart - its a subtle difference - but it was enough. (See catalogue picture).
In addition, on the other side, my brake pedal fouls the exhaust pipe, as its at its fattest there with the exhaust clamp.

... are obviously pattern items - not surprising. I can see the subtle difference mentioned by Andy in his pictures.
