Dominator side stand

Forums

Does anyone know a way of fitting a side stand to a 650SS Norton without having to take the engine and gearbox out please. I have been told in the past that this can be done. Thanks, Ken

Normaly take the primary side all off. The sticking point is the welding on the frame tube (i think its the reinforcing for the centerstand stop ) that stops you sliding the assembly forward into its wedged in spot on the engine plate It may be possible with a new propstand which could have clearance . Worth a try before taking all the primary off.  You often have to grind a bit off the primary cover flange to avoid it touching the stand clamp and making the primary cover leak .

I've mounted a side stand off of a early 90's Kawasaki 750 by making up a steel  left front engine plate and bolting it to that. Was not my idea and had heard about this modification, sounds a bit odd but does not detract from the bike and works perfectly. PM me if you need more details, will attempt to post a picture to this reply

Forgot to mention, do not have to remove primary chain case or anything other than an additional plate and spacers that mount to the left front engine plate. Can provide more close up pictures or, if anyone is interested can make up all the adaptors, for £50 plus postage and supply them. All that owners would need to provide is longer bolts and a used Kawasaki side stand that are relatively cheap on ebay. Can also supply specific model of the stand I used. More close up of side stand on request.

Good afternoon William.

I would be very interested in purchasing a complete kit of parts c/w stand if possible.

I have the mechanical knowledge to fit the kit but not the engineering knowledge to make it.

Many thanks Ian.

I did not use a side stand for most of my years as I did not trust it. I also had plenty of  strength to pull onto the centerstand. Now things are different. A sidestand is easier to use and its much easier to swing a wonky  leg over a tilted bike , A sidestand gives a bit of security when kickstarting a heavy bike . Taking off all the primary is going to open up possibilities to access areas that have not been touched for years , be prepared with a selection of spares, gaskets, oilseals etc.  Better still, leave it till winter  and ride the thing while the sun shines. Winter and old age is not far away!.

Hi William,

I am interested in this and would like you to make up all of the adaptors.

Please send close up pictures and also how I pm you.

And sorry for the delay.

Someone else has contacted me about this but they should have contacted you, I will let you know.

Thanks,

Ken

Hello William

I've just seen your post on your Domi side stand idea ,  I did similar to a trials cub and thinking the same with my 650ss but less space and much heavier ,  could I ask you for a more close up photo of the stand bracket \ engine plate (two heads are better than one) .  Maybe I'll have something ready to fit when the weather turns bad

Appreciate any help or advice ,,,,,,,,,,,Rich

Hi William,

I am keen to fit a side stand to my 1957 Wideline Dommie 99 and I would like to buy the parts from you. Can you contact me on (mob) 0797-444-2620 or email : tandbmcewen@gmail.com please? Many thanks, Tom McEwen

Before I installed a sidestand on my bike, I asked for info on its effect on cornering clearance. I subsequently fitted the RGM stand on my 650 but be aware that it eats heavily into the ground clearance when cornering, which to be honest isn't great on a Dominator in the first place. My stand 'foot' is steadily getting ground away at what I consider very moderate lean angles. At least the centre stands toe pin no longer touches down...

And no, I'm not overweight, I just like to enjoy the sporting behaviour of a Featherbed Norton as it was designed to be used.

Regards,

George
