Dominator dynamo drive

Forums

Hi All,I need a dynamo type engine in order to register a 1957 Dominator 99, which I bought as a derelict Triton 20 years ago, so I am building up a 1957 99 motor from what bits I have lying about, however I haven't done a dynamo one before and the parts book isn't much help. I have the sprocket with Tufnol gear and spring clip riveted on and I know there is a starfish spring which fits behind, but there is also listed a 'distance piece' which I'm going to need to make but which I have no information on, is it the same as the hardened steel washer which is sometimes found fitted in the end of the timing side cam bush or something else entirely? If anyone has a dynamo type motor in bits, and could post a picture, or could describe it, especially dimensions of the spacer,I'd be very grateful. I could codge something up that would drive but some information would save a lot of time.I've got just about everything else, I think,

Thanks all.

Thanks all. hello well your in luck I have a 1954 Dominator and I have rebuilt the the machine the motor as well . I can say that are is a star spring behind the Teflon drive gear . and you need to fit the cam chain and idle sprocket.thats both sprockets and Teflon gear to gether in one go .is not easy you have to take care how you do this, .good luck yours Anna j

Hi Niall

Starting with the camshaft, there should be a steel spacer. (Norvil sell these. but they are 0.75"" ID x 1.25" OD x 0.125" thick.)

Then the star sping washer, then the steel friction washer with the tab. (it should be rivetted to the cam sprocket and holding the fibre gear, but most likely isn't) then fibre gear then the cam sprocket.

A nice dollop of thick grease helps when assembling it all.

Hope this helps

Thanks to both of you, I'm much obliged.

I stacked up a dynamo cam sprocket and the starfish and compared them to an alternator type sprocket, and came up with just slightly over 1/8" different (.128, the drive must have been slipping and ground a bit off something!) , but you can't beat proper information.

Thanks again.

Hi Niall.

I too had difficulty sorting this assembly. I purchased a washer from norvil but found that it put the timing chain badly out of alighnment. I contacted Dale Middlehurst who was extremely helpful as usual, he had a original washer that he measured for me which from memory was around .100" . I turned the washer down to the dimension given and the chain alighned perfectly.

I have photos for all the components and assembly which I tried to send but the files are to big, if you let me have your email address I will gladly send them to you if it helps.

Best regards,

Steve

thanks Steve,

I think I'll just make one up oversize and do a trial assembly, measure the offset and then skim it down until the sprockets line up.

I tried to send my email via your profile but it said 'no valid address found'.

Cheers,

Niall

Dear Paul or other Norton enthusiast,

I am also about to reasemble the dyno drive of my Domi99 1957.

While I have the distance washer and spring star washer I do not know about the 'steel friction washer' with the tab. Is that a special washer? and how should it be 'rivetted to the cam sprocket and holding the fibre gear'. Or do you mean the cam sprocket and fibre gear (i now have a corresponding metal gear) are being riveted together?

Anybody has pictures?

Many thanks in advance for any help,

Georg
