Dominator centre stand

Forums

Hi

I'm in the process of restoring a domi99 and have just taken it of a table my concerns are with the centre stand the bike rocks about and both wheels touch the ground at the same time, the stands had all new bolts and Spring do you think the stands worn or is this the norm as the bike came in bits I've never seen it build up

Did you check to see if there was any ovality in both the frame and stand holes? Rectify by bushing.

Sometimes there could be wear on the lower frame tubes where the stand meets when it's in down position. You sometimes see small plates on other bikes brazed on the tubes to add height.

The stand itself could be worn on the feet pads in which case it is easy to rectify with a build up of weld.

Lastly is it the correct centre stand? As there are one or two differences in models.

Regards,

Paul.

So your saying it's not the norm for both wheels to touch the ground when on the stand

The bike should rest completely on the centre stand with one of the wheels off the ground by 20-50mm approx. As stated, wear over the years either on the stand feet or bottom tube reduces this.

From your photograph it appears that you are doing a super restoration.

On my 99, both wheels just touch the ground when on the centre stand. My son's 88 has the front wheel 1/2" up in the air. I suspect there is no 'correct' answer, and of course tyre choice and suspension unit length will have an effect. As long as the bike isn't prone to fall over I wouldn't worry.

Also, have you checked the rear shock absorbers for the correct length? Perhaps someone in the past has installed improper units that are longer than original.

Has this 99 got the correct forks fitted??? Perhaps somebody has decided to decorate the frame with a set of Long Roadholders or just the longer damper tubes.

Attachment shows my 99 after fitting forks with Commando damper tubes. Note the huge gap between the shrouds and both wheels on terra firma. The plan being to get more potential suspension movement at the front end. Handling was great but bike looked really stupid when on its main stand. Some serious bodging was required to sort the appearance out.

Phil, the longer Commando forks could be matched by some longer suspension units and with all that ground clearance you could have the first (or would that be second?) Dominator cafÃ? racer trials bike. Oddly enough, a friend of minerode the Beamish Trophy Trial on his 88 cafÃ? racer complete with clip-ons some years ago quite successfully. He only did it the once though.
