Are there 2 types of of gear levers for an AMC box, 1 with a 5/8 hole and 5" long, 1 with a 9/16 hole and 7" long

Some years ago I decided my rusty orriginal lever needed replacing with a shiney new one. Can't remember where it came from. It did not fit,splines wrong. Got another ,it fitted but it was hard work being a bit short. Went back to the orriginal rusty long one.
