Domi - the box set!

Hi everyone. I've just purchased a 1958 Domi 88 basket case and I would appreciate any comment/advice (or directions to previous discussions as I'm new to NOC) on its restoration.

The engine & gearbox are intact but everything else is dismantled. I intend to restore it to vgc so an engine re-build and a complete paint/polish/chrome that's needed. I have some previous amateur experience of mechanics and some friends who are quite expert so no great worries about getting the job done (eventually!).

So my thoughts at the moment are:

Where to start? - I can't see that it matters!

Powder coat or paint?

What upgrades are usually done on a re-build?

Are there mods I should do e.g. 12volt electrics, electronic ignition, wider rims (I have no idea if this is ever done or would be of any benefit!)?

What should be avoided? This is probably more important than any of the above!

Any thoughts would be appreciated, even the ones that will question the state of my mental faculties for even attempting this project - I've already had a number of the latter anywaysmiley.

Hi Graham, good luck to you. To save me a lot of typing you could do a search for 'Neil's Norton Notes' where you will find my tips with regard to putting together a 650SS from bits and a 99 to almost original.

I say almost because I go for 12V and electronic ignition every time and a Boyer power box for back up. For me it is powder coating but either blank off the holes and threads or remember to make them correct before re-assembly. A mate recently had a frame and swinging arm stove enameled for £1,100. A grand more than what powder coating would have cost.

Do feel free to ask specific questions as regards to my own preferences, others will have their ideas that work for them, that too has to be respected. Hope you end up with a good bike either way.

12 volt electrics definitely, keep the rims standard, electronic ignition - well some swear by, some swear at. Ihave great faith in a decently rebuild magneto but again, opinions are divided there too. Have fun!

Thanks for these thoughts. As I work through the bits they are helping me get a grip on just what has to be done. At the moment I'm trying to figure out the paint colour having originally thought it was all black due to deterioration and the layers of crud! Now I find the tinware was a rather nice grey/blue. Does anyone know what this is called? I've read other discussions on colour but they leave me non the wiser.

If you send the serial number of the bike to the Club Records Officer he will look it up in the records and tell you what the color was when it left the factory.

Hello your motorcycle being a 1958 first of the alternator models and some where painted in nice colours NOT black Witch is not a colour its neutral colour, if you like So then your machine may of been painted in metal-scene blue/nearest colour, Rolls Royce Le-Mans Blue Metallic, OR, with other option of post office red , or black with sliver tank or polychromatic grey sliver nearest colour , VW platinie grey metallic, but the choice of colour is yours, well I worked in car /motorcycles spaying for 40 years now and done power coating too ,And I do know witch last the longest ,The Paint job, Not Power coating as many would have you beleave , and most men seam to go for black and sliver thinking on the lines of its easy to clean, well you be wrong, is no easier than any other colour, I have a white van and a white van seams to stay clean looking longer than a black van as you can see all the streak marks in the black, so there you are, this is why the funeral cars get washed more than any other car I've seen , because there in black, and If I were you I would start with the Frame and its cycle parts and leave the engine and box to the last , and you need good nuts and bolts do not go all out for stainless steel some bolts in the areas that going to get the most dirt and grime then these need too be stainless steel bolts and nuts washers , see Nooks Nuts Ebay stores , he dose some very nice nuts and bolts, and to your special size if needed, Has for wheels rims keep it standard , See central wheel Birmingham these are the top guys in wheel rims and spokes, have a go at doing it your self, its not that hard once you under stand how its all done, take a look on YouTube Spoking wheels on motorcycles I'm female And even I can spoke Norton wheels up, its the same with spraying Have a go your self its just all about getting to know the pit falls, and having the right Equipment , and you do not have to buy it you can hire , the Equipment, this too is ON YouTube Spray painting lessons, so having a go your self will save you a lot of money, and you get to learn something new in the doing of it all, but the most important thing of all time DO NOT TRY TO DO IT ALL IN ONE GO, Take your Time, and if you get fed up leave it go have a cup of tea and come back to it late on, do not lose your rag if something gets to hard to do, the thing to remember is not to panic, stay cool, and work in your own time space, and work methodically and have fun, as you go , and do not forget a dry build first before any painting, so you then know where thing go and how they fit, is most important, and you may find that some welding may need doing on the underside of the frame where the stand fits, so check this before you get to paint any thing , and when the frame as been painted there need to be one lug that has to be bear no paint this is for the earth terminal , so you get a good earth for the electric wiring positive earth

Anna's right about white cars/vans not showng the dirt as much as dark colours. I have a dark Blue Jag and a white Skoda (!!) and the Jag's the one that needs the most cleaning. Ask any chauffeur and they will confirm that blackis worst - but as the song goes "Black is black..."

But Anna PLEEESE no more of the "I'm (only) afemale and even I...."!! You have said that you are a Mechanical/Marine Engineer so that automatically puts you up above the mere amateurs!

hello Lionel well its right I am only a Female ex-marine engineer but I have fun reading this threads and some of the Questions in them I think some of you all are trying your best to catch me out, But like I said before I been owner and riding Norton motorcycle of one model or another for over 40 years now and I know a Dominator engine and gear box backwards by now, but the day is fast approaching where petroleum fueled vehicles will no longer have any fuel to power them, so too my engineering thinking its time for alternative power source, like clean electric bikes that power them selfs no need for charging, this can be done in a number of ways Look up Nicola Tesla on You Tube his story you find it very interesting , and we all got to learn even I am still learning even at 60 years old , so it time to wake up and see what really going on out there, yours Anna J Dixon a Good Scottish female ex- marine engineer

If this can be done I would like to buy some stock in the company that builds it. But, I spent all my money on buying a share of the London Tower.

Well to disappoint you there is no company to build these machines as its my thinking, and my ideas and why should it be a company at all a small team of engineers like me with my kind of thinking and some finances behide us well I could build the first one my self, under the Dixon name, or DAEB dixon advanced electric bike , just because the scientists say that free energy cannot be done, this dose not mean that there right, 200 years ago they said that electricity was impossible and they never dreamed of computers , well hear we are today and tomorrow as not been written yet, so pioneers like me are people who dare to dream of things too come, yours anna j dixon

Dear Anna, my comments above were tongue in cheek. Incidently 200 years ago, Allesandro Volta had invented the electric battery, Galvani had performed his twitching frog experiment and in a certain Charles Babbage was about to start work building the first computer. Remember the laws of thermodynamics tell us that you get nothing for nothing.

I'm making some, but slow, progress with my project but I may have to take a small step backwards!

I've put new bearings in the rear hub with the wide bearing brake side which I think is correct. However I've put the long end of the spacer in the wide bearing which I now think is wrong.

Does this matter?

The longest end of the spacer tube goes through the RHS bearing. Haynes Ch 7...Sec 7.7....................... Ooopszzzz.
