I have just had my 88SS flywheels crack tested prion to a rebuild and unfortunately a small crack was found where the timing side bearing shaft meets the outer flywheel.
What is the consensus of opinion?
Can the flywheel be saved?
Can it be welded and reground?
Can a timing side only flywheel assembly be sourced and substituted or do I need to look for a matched pair?

Modern welding techniques…
Modern welding techniques have made salvaging broken iron and cast steel parts much easier than in the past. Years ago the choice was generally bronze brazing and take a chance or throw away and replace.
It is now possible to get crankshafts welded to a very high standard that will be perfectly acceptable on a non-racing engine.

Thanks for the responses.…
Thanks for the responses. Yes I meant the crank cheek. Didn't have my parts book with me!
I know a top class welder here in Melbourne. I have a couple of other jobs for him including welding up the adaptor plates for the WD Big 4 side car drive V-twin machine I'm currently building so I will speak to him.

I take it you are referring to the crank cheek - the flywheel being the big circular thing in the middle to which the timing and drive side crank cheeks are bolted. If there is a crack in the crank cheek, it is scrap. It is fortunate that you found it before it failed catastrophically in service. You could fit an unmatched one but ideally another complete crankshaft assembly is what you want. 99 cranks are easily obtainable - I have 3 on a shelf, but 88 ones are notso common. Happy hunting!
