Converting a 1947 16h to solo use

Forums

I am changing my 1947 16h to solo use. It has an upright gearbox. I guess this was a fairly short lived gearbox between the 'dolls head' and the 'laydown'. I was a bit surprised to find an 18T engine sprocket and a 19T gearbox sprocket. I have a manual for an older model with a dolls head gearbox and this is standard solo gearing. The bike pulled a Watsonian Monaco chair very well with this gearing with a top speed of about 55mph. I would imagine that having removed the chair I could up the gearing.

Any advice welcomed please

Prewar the 16H had 20 on the engine. Bacon says post war they had 19. But testers used to be keen on telling readers all about the 'non-snatch low speed in top gear'. No idea why (unless it was for car drivers who couldn't double declutch and thus hated changing down...)

WD bikes were lower geared at 18. That was allegedly for creeping along with marching men (or more likely for off road use).

I'd go for 20 if I were you. Mine isn't over geared.
