The camplate and quadrant…
The camplate and quadrant have to be meshed in the correct position. The haynes manual shows how this should be done. Unfortunately you'll have to remove the cluster (gears, main shaft and layshaft) to allow removal of the camplate and then re-time the camplate with the quadrant.

Graham,
I presume that you have been' in' the gearbox ? If so I would remove the outer cover again and ensure that you have the Quadrant lined up properly and that the lever with the roller in it is not fouling the casing as you move it up and down. Sounds like something inside is not lined up , which is quite easy to do .
