Commando 750 strip down

Forums

Hi

I need some advice please. Recently bought a 1972 750 commando, engine number 204705, can't see any C stamped anywhere so don't believe it to be a Combat engine. I've split the cases, its still on the original main bearings although the timing side gear has not been extracted. Does this motor take the same superblend bearing on both sides?

Is there a puller tool available to pull the gear off the crank timing side to release it from the case? I've seen one but can't find where to order the tool.

I have ordered the engine rebuild dvd.

Many thanks

David

Hi David,

The engine number is in the correct series for a Combat, i.e. the two hundred thousand series. The breather was moved from the end of the camshaft to the rear of the crankcase. There is a lot of discussion about the best location for this breather and a lot of people move it to the back of the timing side case.

The sump plug is small.

The elusive "c" is stamped on the cylinder head under the head steady (so you can't see it )

It is fitted with 32mm carbs (up from the previous 30mm) the inlets are 32mm also.

It is fitted with a different camshaft.

You will hear a lot of talk about how bad combat engines were and still are but this is usually from those who don't have one. It's my opinion only but I believe that once sorted they are lovely engines.

I hope your rebuild goes well.

Hi

I ordered the CD from the club, it's been a brilliant help

The cylinder head has been painted so I can't see a c stamped anywhere!

Got the bearings, planning to drill the cases next weekend, I'll block the oil bleed off as suggested but won't wash away the scavenger as advised not too!

Still can't find the C!!

I've sent the head off for a rebuild at SRM!

It's a bit pricey but they have rebuilt heads for me before so fingers crossed it's going to be fine
