Hello Black and dove grey was For the Model 50, 1960 on, the right colour for 1960 to 1962 to bracebridge street closed, were model 88 standard machine green and dove grey the De-luxe machine were in red and dove grey the model 99 standard ,were in norton silver grey and dove grey, the de-luxe 99 machines were in ardent blue nearest colour now, and dove grey , black and dove grey was a option if ordered , but you can paint it any colour you like as every one else seams too, these colours are from the 1960 and 1961and 1962 catalogs witch I have, Now For your 650 dominator De-luxe was in Dove grey and metallic blue the nearest I have to this is Rolls Royce Le-mans blue a very nice mid metallic blue , and goes nice with dove grey toped of with a black seat with white piping , the Standard 650 you will not see many of these in this country as most went behide the iron curtain, country's but they were in a smoke grey all over the painted parts with a black seat and white piping both machines had a single carburettor fitted, as standard kit,and both motorcycles are very smart machine too own and ride, as was the 650ss the very early 650ss were in Polychromatic blue , as the Manxman was But these machine had the big tank of 3.1/2 gallons , and had more painted cycle parts, then the very early manxman ,witch had more chrome cycle parts . the Early 650ss in blue had a black seat, with white piping, , as did the late 1961to 1962 650ss in silver and black paint work, the front mudguard was a sports mudguard not the valanced mudguard as on very early machines, and rev counter kit and folding kick-starts were optional extras , as on the 650 Manxman these items were standard to the machine, and the custom special had a chrome kick stand and all folding foot rests and the manxman had its own exhaust system that never went on any other norton , real music, yours anna j

Not forgetting that many 99DL's built in 1959 but sold as 1960 models left the factory in red and dove rather than the later standardised colours. I have one with orriginal paint.

Interesting Anna, and yes we have had this before but clearly not yet resolved. I have an August 1960 99 on the go and with the cycle parts powder coated black, this just leaves the mudguards and tank to finish. Tank is always last, down to experience.

It was Dale Middlehurst who told me the correct colours should be dove grey and black, even though the tank and side panels were blue. No blue was ever found on the frame though and that has matching numbers with the enjine.(& log book)

At this stage the only change I could make would be black mugguards and silver tank, but I already havea slimlinethis colour ,so the more expensive dove grey it is. Besides, Dale knows his stuff too......

if its a Deluxe you will not find blue on the frame as frames are painted Dove grey and in my notes the Black and Dove Grey Machine are Optional as requested by the new buyer that the time, if a lady rider for instance want her machine in pink and dove grey Norton would of done just that for her, And may Dale bless him , has looked that the paint specification wrongly. But any one can get it wrong, what I have stated hear are from the Catalog's from these years 1960 to 1962 and are Norton's own factory catalogs , as for the early Deluxe 99 in red they painted them and fitted the 99 engines as the 88 engine were not ready in time, as there was some delay in getting frames and casting for the crankcases sometimes it was cylinder heads, or other parts that were delayed some machine were even pulled of the line only part completed , until parts were made ready for fitting, this also happened in the production of the norton manxman 650, part completed machines were pulled of line until a later date, you find this with the workshop numbers not in running order, and funny stamp markings , like they had to stop marking the machine until a later date some stamp marking were not completed and then some were changed ,and some were completed later on with only half if the number marked on the machine, pulling machine off line was so the line carried on , and you should of asked this question before going to the powder coaters , I am not keen on power coatings as pin holes in this coating will rust later on and the power coating comes off , I have seen lots of motorcycles with this happing to there frame and mudguards., with using the right paint , ie cellulose and then low baking it, if there is a scratch or chip you can touch up and keep it looking good , but you cannot touch up powder coating and its will chip, if hit hard , there is no perfect answer too paint work , and do you know how many shades of black there are, my friend found this out with his black Suzuki GSXR600 . he had a hard time getting the right shade even that the paint was from Suzuki dealer. its like the polychromatic blue on my bike you have to redo the paint work in the same way as you did it the first time, as it will not look right, I had to experiment with it to get it looking the same as the rest, of the shade, not easy by any means, even Norton them selfs had its trouble and you get different shade from bike to bike, its all depended on what the day was like and the temperature and humidity of that day , its in its self would change ever so lightly the colours shade, yours anna j

Well Anna, you can touch up powder coating with paint. Not often you need to as it's tough stuff but you can and it does the trick.

Perhaps you are mixing this upwith nylon coating? Very popular in the late 80's. I had my Commando frame coated with this and if you damage the nylon coating then you have to seal it up fast. Not as good as powver coating.

Wellmy 99 isnot a deluxe so I'm just waiting for Fred W to let me know when my new front mudguard is ready. I just hope it doesn't take anything like as long as the pre F/bed 1957 Model 50 engine plates.....
