I took a bolt out of the guard of my 62' 88ss which I believe to be the one it left the factory with and measured it. It and it's nut came out with a pair of 3/16 Whitworth wrenches. From the base of the head to the end of the threads it was 1.450" long and the threaded portion was a hair over 3/8".
