Centre stand

Forums

I'm building an Atlas from a basket case. Getting there slowly, but I have a question. There's no centre stand, which I can live with, but do I need to bolt through the mounting holes for stability, or is this not necessary ? If the bolt holding the stand is part of the structural integrity do they make spacers to fit between the engine plate & frame ?

I was talking to an 'expert' about this very subject about a year ago and thought no more about it until I read this. He told me, as you suggest that the Centre stand is indeeda part of the frame strengthening structure, as is the cross bar that goes across the rear of the slimline frame, over the rear mudguard.

Not sure how critical this is, because my poor man's Manx (Wideline) has no Centre stand but has the lugs. Maybe I'll make something up before Spring.

A slimline frame I bought for a Dommie racer project had the lugs cut off BUT had sealed 1/2" holes through the bottom frame rails for a rod to pass through. Perhaps that is a clue of the necessity in hard use?
