Bung on petrol tank

Forums

Hi

I have an Atlas tank on my 99SS, it only has one bung hole on the bottom for the petrol tap, what do people use for a tap that includes a reserve? I've been told that these modern main/reserve taps leak and I should consider drilling another hole for the reserve tap.

I have a main/reserve tap on my Guzzi that never leaks, can't use that of course due to threads not matching. Any suggestions for the Norton? I currently have no reserve...

thanks! Bruce

I have used petrol taps with a main/reserve option. No leakage problems but the reserve amount of petrol is minimal. These days I just zero the trip mileometer whenever I fill up and make sure I don't travel much more than 150 miles between fills. It's many years since I ran out of petrol and the last time was at the top of a hill with a filling station at the bottom. Jammy or what?

Norton used a Ewarts long bodied single tap , pull on and turn to lock, then pull again for reserve, all on one plunger, These are very rare now. If you have one they can be dismantled with care and the cork renewed , I have the only new old stock in the world of long plungers!, Enough to last me for 500 years at present consumption rate.

500 Years! Well then you certainly wouldn't want to sell one would you? LOL.

thanks!

Very happy to sell 450 years worth as i am 70 this year. You can vary the amount of fuel in reserve by elongating the stand pipe length.Simples!, Just replaced the orriginal plunger (54 years old) with a nice new one ,sealed perfectly. All i need now is some fuel proof fibre washers for the monoblock, Ethanol fuel turns them mushy.
