Battery

Forums

The battery on my 72 commando vented acid from the breather pipe.I didnt notice till too lateresulting in a nightmare of corrosion at the alloy rear wheel, chain guard, brake linkage etc.

I checked the voltage at the battery and found it to be around 17vat about 4500rpm. I thought this could only be a faulty zener diode so I changed it. There is now about 13.5v at the battery at 4500rpm. I went for a ride and stopped after less than 10 miles to check for signs of the dreaded acid shower and found that it had happened again!! I cleaned the acid off best as I could and headed back home with the headlight on. On arrival there was again spots of acid at the rear end. Again I checked the voltage at the battery and it didnt rise much over 13.5v even if I revved the tripe out of it. Before all this happened the battery was recently new. Could it be damaged in some way. I founda firm selling batterys for motorcycles on the internet. They have a sealed gel type battery of 12ah that is about the correct physical dimensions to fit the commando. Would it be a good idea to fit one of these? I really dont want my bike getting anymore acid showers!!

Hi Barry,I'm no expert, but even when the battery is over charging it should not vent out acid, just gas. So it must be a faulty battery unless you have it unsecured and its jumping up and down. I run a small gel type battery on my 750 Commando, it works perfectly even holding full charge after the bike was not used for 3 months during last winter and its been fitted for over 5 years now.RegardsAlan.

Hi Barry,

The obvious one here is has the battery been over filled?

Level should be just to cover the separators; level should be indicated on case somewhere.

Check the voltage of the battery with the engine off, a fully charged 12v batt would read about 12.8 volts. May be you have a dud cell.
