16H primary chaincase gasket

Forums

Hello all,

I am having trouble sealing the primary chaincase on my 1946 16H.

I bought a new 'rubber seal gasket 5/8" x 3/8" section' from David Wilkinson, Classic Motorcycle Spares.

The new gasket looked OK and it fitted nicely over the lip on the backplate (exactly the right width) ... but I could not get the chaincase itself to fit over the gasket.

So I trimmed the new gasket down a bit to reduce the thickness and then liberally applied sealant around the joint.

On the face of things this appeared to be successful ...

I waited a week to let the sealant harden but when I tried to refill the chaincase with oil it just p....d out !

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hugh - I have the same problem. Last week when a thread started on this topic I followed the lead and ordered a new gasket assuming it would solve the problem but I (foolishly) did not take the case off first to check mine. So of course his is identical to mine anyway...I can only get the case on by using a half-thickness nut. There must have been a smaller section on the early singles. But how big? And are they available anywhere? I would guess they have to be something like 3/8" square.Take care with sealant. It took me hours of hard work to remove the one it had on before. I suspect that was too big, and PO had jammed it on so it was stuck fast after 25 years. I had to put a 90 degree bend in the tip of a steak knife and saw it out!

Thanks David,

In the previous threadSkip Brolund mentioned a tapered cross section gasket. So I am going to buy another 5/8" x 3/8" rubber seal gasket and cut/file a smooth taper around one edge and reduce the width if necessary. I will also take more care with the cutting this time. Hopefully this will at least reduce the leak rate .... Thanks for the advice on the sealant.

Regards

Hugh
