16H oil bath issues

Forums

I wonder if anyone can assist with a couple of issues:

The single nut holding the primary case on my 1937 16H is about twice as thick as the one on a Dommie. Is this correct? It seems to get too tight too fast to get the footpeg back on. The peg came off soit was maybe too tight before...

The case has not been off for years (the last tax disc is 1958) - and when I tried to remove it on Fridayit was stuck. I suspect I'll need to prise it off with levers - unless I take the risk and don't inspect the clutch - add some oil - and hope the heat and vibration when at lastit firesup helps to unstick it. Any ideas welcomed!

Thanks

David

I would not suggest using levers as you will bend the case for sure.

Try a length of wood (like a dowell) and tap around the edges where you can get to them.

Good luck.

The nut should be the same for all Nortons with pressed steel oil bath chain cases. The one you have is wrong, the correct one should be easy to find. If the chain case hasn't been off since 1958 you can be sure that the sealing ring will have degraded to a stage where it will no longer seal. Heating the case may be the only way to remove the outer, and this will of course destroy the seal, but not to worry about that. You will obviously have to give the cover a coat of paint too...

David, Are your footrest serrated tubes integral or the separate type ? I've come across a similiar situation and wonder if the original pre-war sealing rubbers were thinner. Certainly some of the WD type footrest tubes do seem to be on the short side, I don't know if the civilian pattern are as well.

Thanks, all. Interesting thoughts.

They are serrated. Part of the top edge of the rubber gets in the way of removing the mag cover - it comes off if I turn the engine slightly so that isn't really a problem. I'll ask Russel Motors I think.

I had another bash at getting the chain case off. Quiet literally with mallet and piece of wood. No chance it seems. It was off in 1991 (we have a note book) - and put back on - but not run. It now seems to be glued. Probably put on dry and probably no chain case lubricant.

Might try part filling with petrol. That'll be messy...smelly and possibly hazardous. Clutch plates seem to be stuck. It won't release and the kick start turns the engine even when the lever is operated even though the push rod is working. So my options of just oiling it and then firing up and warming the engine looks like a non starter. Unless we can get is started on its stand in first gear maybe...

Try using a thin strip of flat steel, maybe 6ins x 1/2in, and bend the last 1in at right-angles. Sharpen the edges of the bent bit, so you effectively have a right-angled knife. With patience, you should be able to work it around the case, inbetween the cover and the rubber band. I've done this successfully on a few, usually where the owner (me!) has been a bit too generous with the RTV.

David, when you mentioned half filling with petrol, I thought you were going to suggest throwing a lighted match in the inspection hole...that ought to separate 'em...

Don't try this at home, Children....
