16H Gearbox rebuild - Jumping out of 3rd Gear - Idiots guide needed

Forums

Looking to do a rebuild of my gearbox on my 42 16H over the winter to try and resolve the jumping out of 3rd issues it currently has.

I've rebuilt a few old aircooled vw van gearboxes in the past and messed with swapping internals etc, however looking for some advice on what to look for etc, with the VW ones there was loads of info availableand plenty of videos on youtube to help you out, not so with the Norton one.

Therefore, if anyone had a list of what to look for and any do and donâts would be much appreciated. I have all the manuals/diagrams etc and some details from a few sites.

Also, any ideas of what replacement parts to buy/likely culprits please let me know. Iâm happy to buy a few likely cause additional parts and have them ready rather than having to waitâ?

Worn dogs. Third gear is almost always first to go. I have a similar bike.

To carry on riding just rev it a bit in second and straight into top. Same principle for coming down the box. I had to do this with my 55 19S and that had a side car on it.

A quick look at the NOC spares list shows stocks of 3rd gear (both main & layshaft) and 2nd gear (layshaft) which are possibly the culprits.

The square dogs that lock each gear into its neighbour on the shaft wear so that they're rounded off and tend to wedge themselves out of engagement.
