Norton passion

Hello all well I have had a Very deep passion for the Norton name for well over 50 years and its the Future of Norton,s name I am concend with, Has there is some new machines too come from japan thats 20 years a head of anything else, So the Norton Team need to get there thinking caps on and build something new that 50 years ahead of its time, power by electric or HHO clean green bikes ats fast, to carry the Norton Name on for the next 100 years well it look like a healthy debit on this story , passion runs hot !!! yours Anna J Dixon

Seems as good a thread as any to ask:

Way back in 2010, Alan Cathcart tested the then new 961 for Classic Bike Guide. In an interview with Simon Skinner (Norton R&D team) he (SS) states that regarding 'performance': 'We'll have the 700cc Rotary here if they want Superbike performance.'

Given I don't follow the news that much....... what happened next??

A bit of a challenge (and what happened to Norton's Challenge?) to come up with something 50 years ahead of the rest. History is full of ideas that were ahead of their time and as a result came to naught. For a start, you have to convince the buying public to actually pay for something different - very difficult. One rule of business is to see what the most sucessful firms are doing and copy them, then add a few individual touches. It appears to be working pretty well for the current Norton brand.

You are all correct about the rarity of free energy, and only somebody without any knowledge of even O level physics would know that it simply is not possible. I have been to the Norton factory as have many others and Stuart Garner has abusiness model which is based upon a relatively low number of units produced in any time period. He declared openly that he did not want to compete directly with Triumph or the Japanese Big 4 (see what I did there?). On that basis he has no need to try and be a visionary trying to predict the needs of the next generation of riders in 20 years time. Niche Market is I believe the expression for his target customers.

Apologies accepted David.

Niche market is exactly where Norton is right now but what of the future? A mass produced single of the future perhaps, built on a small budget? Such a machine would sell on the name alone but is Norton intended to be always niche and therefore low volume?

Does anyone think there is a future for an electric Norton (I don't just mean with an electric starter) maybe with solar panels and a windmill? This stuff appears trendy in some quarters. What would you like to see in the future? For me it is singles in the same way Tri*mph reintroduced the twin!

Well you do not know about the new physics like the Drake equation proceded by Professor Excel of Mathmatics and Quontum mechnics witch puts E=EM2 -Squared in to histroy . and you can get free electric and its been proven By Nickola Tesla in 1893 If you care too read his notes, Rigth now back to Norton Business

Well Norton will have to Change its Fuel system from fossel fuel by 2025 or be charged a carbon off setting tax witch by then will be coming in on all things that use fossel fuels you will be charged by a small micro chip fitted to your machine so you can be tracked and a computer will work out how much you be charged by electronic banking this will be the future after 2025

2025 and the tax on fresh air? That is down to us not to re-elect the establishment parties that have led us to this with their propaganda and support for junk science.

As for a new Norton, I would like a 350 single, perhaps water cooled but 4 stroke and a six speed box. It would have a top speed of around 90 mph and average 90 mpg. Maintenance would be minimal and reliability as good as it gets. Oh, and it must sound like a proper bike!

Currently all businesses have to be carbon neutral by 2019 or be closed down. That means no Chrome platers for a start.

We need to move away from carbon phobic MP's or we are finished with regard to the riding element, Ethanol just the start of getting you off the road. Rescind Ed Two Kitchens 2008 climate change Act and all will be well again.

I think my Norton of the future would needto be more than 250cc, a buzz box is not what I had in mind. Or a silent killer.

I'll still be riding my Dominator until I fall off my perch. However, the younger generation of motorcyclistswon't give a tinker's about how their future bikes are powered so long as the have 2 wheels. All my grandkids have Oset electric motorcycles and great things they are too. I have glimpsed the future and it ain't bad. Talking of the future, have you noticed just how many motorcycle auctions there are these days? Lots of older people thinning down their collections or dying off and their collections being sold. Prices for run of the mill classics seem to be creeping down as more appear on the market.

I agree with Gordon here. The Stafford auction last weekend failed to sell a number of machines although I was really only looking at the Nortons. There were a good number of them too, perhaps indicative of collectors now selling off. Either their expectations were too ambitious and they had set the reserves too high or demand was down. However, I think we also see this when the stock market is on a high - which it is - so I am not sure of the reasons.

Will admit the CRP logo raised a wry smile, but you can't help but be impressed, no?

Mind you, railway engineers have long built locomotives with a diesel engine powering generators for electric motors, due to it's far better power delivery characteristics.

As an aside, anyone who's ever lusted after the CNW Commando's may already know that Mr Corbin (of 'Gunfighter' seat fame) was an early champion and builder ofelectric vehicles. Although hampered by the double bugbear of battery weight and range they were certainly interesting machines..

Oh dear. Not another one. In good old English £20000. Range sub 100 miles. Now I oftentravel to the south coast from my home in the East Midlands and it is 160 miles each way. That will mean at least3 full reccharges for the round trip, and then what about if you need the lights for the return trip?

A long time to recharge is described as a myth, then says it will take 3.5 hours. That means almost 12 hours of recharging for my round trip assuming thwere are recharging stations no more than 80 to 100 miles apart.

Cost of replacement batteries as they have a finite life is franklyunknown or not honestly detailed???????? They then threaten (my word I admit) to introduce a scheme whereby you will pay a monthly fee so that new batteries can be supplied at the end of lifr. So you buy a bike for around £20000,and then have to have a credit line just to get new batteries.

The idea of an electric bike appeals to me in principle BUT batteries using any known technology simply do not provide the answer. Hydrogen cells? I don't know if they are the answer, but there has to be a concerted effort to find an alternative energy source. Despite AJD's exhortations neither Tesla nor the Green Party are the answer.

Very good point Mike. I to am not convinced about electric power at the moment. The two biggest polluters are China and the US, niether has a care about signing up to cutting emissions.

Getting back to Annas post, I think HD do very well with there pushrod twins and I suspect Norton does not have the money to chalenge either Triumph or HD. I am sure having been round the factory they could build there bikes a lot more efficient and cater for the two up touring market better before they start looking at battery power. But must not forget they must also look at other designs.

Well I Must say this your all not still getting the point, We have the technology to produce motorcycle in carbon Fiber body and powered by electirc motors fitted inside the front and rear wheels and the power sorce is the Tesla Collector device, so your picking up electrical power from the atmosphere on the MOVE , the power is then transferred to Capacitors linked to one another in pallel -series form these are lighter in weight to any battery, these machnies will be zero carbon emissions , Harley Davidson have all ready a electric powered motorcycle , Zero Emissions , and you still cannot get your heads around the fact that there is Free energy , I can tell you have been spun lies for years , Nicola Tesla was written out of history has he had found away to tap Free electrical power for all the world, in his experiments at palm Springs in 1893 were a 100 year behided were we should be now, in advanced electrical technologhy But one John Huchinson in Canada is working on the same Tesla principles with advances to day he can make metals into a rubber like state or he can fracture them into bits by using magnetic frequences the human body has a magnetic frequence of 7.8 Hz the planet has the same frequence of 7.8Hz so if you have a set of magnetic field out of phases with each other you can then levitate, this is how the Germans in ww2 built there Vril 1to Vril3 disc shaped aircraft in 1939 to 1943 other also were built up to 33metres across these where the Haunebu series from 1 to 8 all were electrogravivic perpulltion and could levitate to over 8000 feet and move to over Mac 8 in speed, these were top secret program , and kept top Secret to day, they do not what you to know all this has where runing around with primitive machnies runing on fossel fuels so they Illuminarti have full contorl over us all and there making millions out of fossel fuels they do not care about this planet we all have too share, so the futuer if we have one will have to be a Zero carbon one, like it or not, yours Anna J

I'll keep this bit as short as I can so as not to incur the wrath of the disinterested.

AJD has been got to by the GreenLibLabConand now herself a carbon phobic, even though the total CO2 in the atmosphere (inc a tiny man made trace = 0.004%, all essential for life on earth) New cars had to be fitted with catalytic converters to turn carbon monoxide, CO, into harmless carbon dioxide, CO2. Stage 2 was then to tax CO2 or if you like, fresh air! There has been no statistically significant global warming since 1997 and currently a team of scientists are looking at uncorrupted raw data to check if we have actually been having cooling! If we are doomed it is because of overpopulation and warring factions. Coal will be the biggest generator of electricity until at least 2030, part of that will be to charge all these batteries. Last November the UK government gave away £720 Million to the Green climate fund and each year we pay £18.3 Billion for wind turbine subsidies etc to some of the richest people in the land, while some people can't afford to keep warm.

So, I'd like Norton to continue to build proper motorcycles with real engines and not be associated with some trendy. zero carbon scam.

I hope you all live long enough to see this scandal exposed! Or is it too big to fail?

Neil Mate I with you on most of what you siad hear yes there is a big Scam going on and the thing is its by our own Government and others arounld the world getting rich out it all, the biggest of all this is the Chemtrials there sparying in the High atmosphyer these Chemicals are Toxic I have all the out standing prof of all this on my computer the tribunal in Chassner Califorina in 2014 , out if this 6 aircraft pilots addmited too they where sparying Chemicals to alter the climate, and framers in these areas found trees dieing

land and water contaminated after testing the land and water there was a spike in toixc metals like in this poster below But I too love the old Four Stroke engine and the old Steam locomotive, and your V twins as well has the parrel twins and singles but we real need to think a bit more about the world we live in

the thing is I know we have technologhy thats far advanced and where not using it , instead where all paying though the nosie for fossel fuels some one make billion out of it all that why this advanced tech has been denid us all has it dose not make the big big bucks that fossel fuels do, and the biggest thing is the lies there telling the populous thought the media all out of greed of more money out of you the sheep - people just look how much better this world would be with free electric world wide , No guys its all wrong , we only one world we need too look after it more, before it come down around our ears, any way no mater what Norton dose for the future , I think that Need some new in the mix, maybe a smaller model that fits in with learner riders like a 500cc machine, this then sells the brand on too new riders in the future

long live the name of Norton

Sorry Gordon, but after13 years in a slaughterhouse I'm with Anna on sheep! Pigs are bright, cattle are knowledgeable, but sheep are (sorry, no other word for it)...just plaindumb!!

Can't say I envy you the experience. Every species has evolved sufficient intelligence to survive - except us who have a bit more than we need. Shall we all just assume forone minute that you are right Annaabout the need for Norton motorcycles to change direction and develop a high volume, low cost bike for the masses using, perhaps, Tesla's ideas on using a form of energy which is generated for free. This would presumably allow them to continue manufacturing state of the art machinery for decades if you are correct. In this case I think that you have missed a real trick. Writing on here to a load of "old" diehard, oil soaked Norton enthusiasts is really a case of swimmnig against the tide. You need to write to Stuart Garner at Norton and tell him what he is doing wrong with his business and how to take the right path, and what technology to use. He is an entrpreneur, after all and will be open toconsidering a coherent business plan to deal with the long term futureso he might take on board your ideas. Unless you have already done so and omitted to tell us, in which case what was his response?

I have had many opportunities to obtain motorcycles less than 50 years old. They just weren't interesting enough. If they had had "Norton" on the tank (or battery enclosure) it would have made no difference. My favorite bike for heavy Manhattan traffic is a 1968 Triumph 250. I just don't want to be weaving in and out of traffic on a heavier bike and also no one wants to steal it.

Here is a new bike that appeals to me:

http://www.stevetonkinclassics.com/

but I would not take it into the city. I would still take the 250. I am waiting for someone to improve on these 2 bikes. I don't think they will.

Jonathan makes a very valid point. If, like me, you regard bikes as a means of transport, the badge on the tank has no great significance. I am fortunate enough to have a few bikes in the shed - each one is best for one particular purpose. Only one is a Norton... Wouldn't mind a ride on a Tonkin Tornado though!

The carbon footprint of a modern vehicle battery is appalling. Raw materials from some obscure African desert, shipped to China for some highly suspect processing, then to Japan to be made into batteries, then to the uk. Green? I don't think so.

One sort-of-good thing that has come out of the hybrid concept (cars mostly of course) is that the buyers' fixation with engine size is removed. They tend to use variants of the Atkinson cycle where, among other things, valve overlap is eliminated. Not good for the ratio of power to capacity - but that is not the objective. If you must have a bit more power than by all means have a bigger engine. But the history of motoring has taxation penalising engine size; and racing classes limiting engine size; thus forcing ever more exotic engines onto the market. At least the modern way of taxing according to some (highly suspect) emission value makes more sense. But Jonathan must be right - electric has to be the future. Probably with rapid charge batteries. THE SILLINESS OF TESLAâS BATTERY

  • Date: 04/05/15
  • Mark B Spiegel, Seeking Alpha

Last week, Tesla introduced a 10kWh home battery pack for back-up use only.It will cost $7140 installed, will be dead in fewer than five hours, and canât run an entire house or central air conditioning or charge an electric car.

In an effort to distract investors from its cash-burning car business, as well as to find some use for millions of Panasonic cells that it has committed to buy without being able to sell enough cars to utilize them, Tesla Motors last week introduced a 10kWh home battery pack meant only for emergency back-up power. (It also introduced a 7kWh pack meant for regular use that also makes no economic or utilization sense, but that can be a subject of a different article.) Tesla is pricing this back-up battery at $3500 before installation costs, and Solar Cityis offering an installed purchase price of $7140. To put the inadequacy of this product into perspective, hereâs agreat summary of the power requirements of many household items. Itâs pretty clear that without âgoing crazyâ, your house can easily draw 3kw of electricity; and yet, Teslaâs 10kWh back-up battery hascontinuous output of only 2kw, and thus is inadequate to run even a medium-sized house, and would be completely dead in five hours anyway, with no capacity to run central air conditioning or charge an electric car. (For a medium-sized house, a central air conditioneralonedraws nearly 5kw.) Sure, to make that battery last longer than five hours, everyone could huddle into one broiling hot room and shut off everything but the refrigerator and a few light bulbs, but why would you do that whenâ? â?a comparably priced 16kw natural gas-fired generatorcan run your entire house (including the air-conditioning) foras many hours as needed, at a cost of less than $2/hour (assuming 195 cubic feet/hour consumption at full draw and aNew York State gas priceof less than $10 per 1000 cubic feet of gas)? [...] In other words, this new back-up battery from Tesla is just another attempted Musk distraction from a core auto business that I expect in this weekâs Q1 earnings report will show record GAAP losses and the companyâs lowest gross margin (ex-ZEV credits) in at least a yearâ?Full post
