Clutch stalling engine

Forums

Back again

Right then the engine on my mercury runs a treat. But it has stood for a few years...i hope you don t mind me asking before I have even looked at this problem but I figure if any of you guys can point me in the right direction before I start it could be a few evenings saved....

The bike wil stand on tick over all day but the slightest pull on the clutch will stall the engine flat???

I belive the clutches on these are one of the weak points but any info prior to investigation would be helpfull

Again thanks in advance

Shouldn't happen. Nothing wrong with the clutch fitted to a Mercury, if it is set up properly. Off with the primary chaincase and report back what you find.

Is it possible that the clutch cable has chaffed against the kill button wire?

Its possible that the clutch is catching on the cover when lifted, one of the spring adjusters may have unscrewed itself or a siezed pushrod is loading up the engine . All will be revealed with the cover off.

I agree with Robert. It sounds like the engine is becoming over-loaded.

If operating the clutch lever is initiating the problem then the cause has got to be somewhere along the gearbox mainshaft.

The pressure plate lifting and making contact with the outer cover would probably gets most votes as the cause but checking elsewhere might be shrewd. If the mainshaft bearings aredying then the main shaft would be pushedthrough the gearbox wall. This, in turn, would let the 4th gear rub against the casing or bearing outer.

At the other end of the shaft, is there a problem with the actuating arm? It is possible to that very important ball bearing is not doing a good job anymore.
