Hi All,
I have started to build a wideline cafe racer using 7" wide fork spacing, I have installed the front end and may have a problem. I am using a twin leading shoe front brake plate and when I put the wheel in not including the near side dust cover the wheel fit seemed to be tight.
I measured the inside distance between the stanchions at the bottom yoke then did the same measurement at the top of the sliders and noticed that it was approx 2-3mm wider at the sliders. If the dust cover was installed the difference would be greater, I thought that maybe the wheel I have suited the 7 3/8" yokes but I checked it against other Norton front wheels both single shoe and the earlier type used on Inters that the hub bolted together and they all were similar widths.
So in effect the forks are slightly splayed out at the bottom, I assume they should run parallel for correct operation.
Can anybody shed any light on this problem assuming it is a problem.
Cheers
Andy

Hi Mark,
Brand new stanchions used.

I would suggest fitting a turned pointer through the steering stem. This will give you a reference for the front wheel centre line. If you mark the centre line of the rim around the circumference and fit the hub and rim without brake plate and spacers, you can centre the wheel to the pointer and then calculate spacers required or if material requires removing from sliders.

You might have a problem with the yokes.
Are they correct for the frame? Has someone done a bodge and mixed model parts? If you can find part numbers on the yokes then note them down and check against a parts list.
Also is there any chance you can post some photos of all the bits? A picture or two always helps with problems like this.
Other items worth checking:
The slider boots. Are they the correct earlytype for 7" yokes? The later versionshave aslightly wider axle boss and brake anchor point. Bothwill push the brake plate over to the left side.
Definitely the stanchions for straightness.
Thewheel bearings for a correct fit.

I agree, the most probable cause is the sliders.? The sliders for 7 3/8" yokes have more meat on them and you will not get the wheel to fit in.
I suppose you could get the bosses milled down or find another pair of sliders.

Hi Paul,Thanks to all the people who replied, I checked the sliders against another pair and they are wider. 4mm each side so I have taken them of and milled down to the size I need. I was not aware that that the later sliders were a different width so thanks again for the advice.CheersAndy
