Just had the rebuilt wheels returned for my 1962 88, both on 19inch rims (which might now be a mistake)
Anyhow the issue is choice of tyres. I would prefer NOT to use the Speedmaster and Safetymaster tyres from Avon, but I would like Avon tyres as my preferred choice. So I need 90/90 and 90/100 sizes BUT cannot find a rear tyre. Roadrider and Roadrunner both have a 90/90 tyre suitable for the front 19 inch rim (WM2 1.85) but not a 90/100 that would fit same rim on rear wheel.
Or am I missing something???
Practical experience of using the AM tyres on a Slimline f'bed would be appreciated. Thanks

Whatever is wrong with using Avon Speedmaster, front, and SM rear tyres? They are more than capable of coping with the speed, and power output, of any roadgoing Dominator 88. Also, they are tyres (although now of better composition) that would have been originally fitted.

Totally agree with John. I have posted on previous threads regarding tyres. The Avon SM and Speedmaster tyres get an undeserved bad press. They are entirely suitable for Dominators. I have tried many tyres over the years and have always returned to the Speedmaster/SM combination.

Long time since I rode on…
Long time since I rode on Avon SM (Safety Mileage)rear (35 years)but I tooremember 'scratching' in spite of the square profile. An AvonRoadrunner rear with a Speedmaster front worked really well and, if I was put on the spot, I'd say this combinationgave the best handling. The AvonAM24s were pretty good too.I presently use AM26 Roadriders front and rear although I find the rear wears out very quickly - but - the one thing I have noticed is a big improvement in braking with the Roadrider front compared to the Speedmaster. If really pushed, under brakingthe Speedmaster shrieked like hell, skippingandthreatening to lock upwhereas the Roadrider copes without any protest.
Tyre pressures are something to watch out for and using the 'old' pressures with Roadriders will result in wobbly handling - I find 28 psi rear and 32 psi front works well on my ES2 and Dommi. If going for 'modern' tyres watch out for clearance regards the mudguard bridge - I think I'm right in saying a 3.25-19 will givea fractionmore clearance than a 90/90-19.
Just don't put an SM on the front like an old Honda I oncerode - horrible -bloody horrible!!!

Wow - fancy having a front…
Wow - fancy having a front brake that will make a tyre skip and shriek! That said, the SLS is pretty good on my Domi and will makethe tyre squeal if you indulge in a panic stomp on the brakes. I use 25 psi front and rear with my Speedmaster/SM combination. It works for me. Years ago I took the sidecar off my wife's A10 and rode itsolo with a very squared-off SM on the front. Really 'interesting' cornering and it just wouldn't wear out. What, buy a new tyre? Never crossed my mind.

Thanks Roland...but what was your rear wheel spec? 19inch WM2 ? (Slimline frame.) which the Avon tech sheet implies is too narrow for the 90/100 option. Unless you can advise otherwise
Thanks John

Thanks for comments John. Personally I have bad memories of the ribbed front tyres and prefer the 'modern' tread patterns, hence my query. I have noticed ,however, the sales 'push' that the S/master and SM are getting at the M/C shows.

Hi John,
Roadriders on my 88 are the best tyres I`ve used on this bike in 35years I`m on 19"rims ,for sure.I agree with higher tyre pressures 28 rear 32 front is ok,sweet handling guaranteed.Just make sure the rest of the bike is up for it,ie steering head bearings ,shocks, forks and swing arm,are in fine fettle with no slop.

I'm sure it has been mentioned before but watch your mudguard clearance with a 3.25" Avon Roadrider on the front. It's a bit tight. Bring back the 3.60 x 19 Roadrunner - my last one clocked up 30,000 miles before it was binned.

Thanks Alan...but can you expand please. 90/90 front and 90/100 rear ? and yours is a Slimline frame?
As to the rest then 'yes' the whole m/c is getting a complete rebuild.
