My 1963 88SS rear number plate tinware is wrong (possibly BSA) and, what's worse, shabby. But can anyone confirm the correct type?
There seems to be an 'open' type and a 'closed' type but although I've looked at lots of bikes I can't understand which had what and when.
I bought a shiny new 'open' one at Banbury - not having my bike with me - and carefully painted my numbers - and now I find the old one has four bolt holes and the new one has three (one at the narrow top and two at the bottom)! So the 'open' type must be wrong after all. No sign of the PO blocking a central hole...
Was the open type only used with chrome plated guards perhaps?
Oh - and on Anna's favourite subject of poor fit - the bottom bracket with 2 holes is flat not curved so won't fit a curved mudguard without fettling..with the risk of damaging the flat surface...

That makes sense - my new…
That makes sense - my new one is indeed wide enough for my 7 digits which are cramped on the old one. Although my bike has 1964 registration (B) on 1963 model (slow sales for 'A' reg) . But mudguard drilled with four holes means they either hadn't cottoned on to 7 digits or using up old stock. Now I need to re-think - don't really want to drill a central upper hole and have 2 to block up.
Bother... numbers might stay cramped.

The change was not due to chrome mudguards. It was because of the change from 6 digit reg numbers to 7digit.The previouswas 9" wide and was brought in again to replace the 8" wide closed type. Regards Ron
