Hello to all,
since last year i became the proud owner of a Norton 850 Commando Interpol '74, Frame No. #850#F 111 107# Engine No. #319242#
I bought it without papers and even now (although i already invested a resonable amount of euros and GBP's in it, which i don't regret !!!) i'm still uncertain of once in my live hitting the road with it.
It might seem silly and woussy, but this is a cry for HELP !!!
Any way at any costs i would like it to find a way to get the original documents.
I guess i'm at the right place, refered by the good man Phil Albutt from Andover Norton.
Sorry for the bad English,
Greetings Ziggy 501

Dear richard,
I'm from Belgium, and whatever result i'll get i would like to thank you for reacting this fast,
The bike must have been imported into Belgium quite a while before 1989, cause the previous owner, the guy i bought it from drove it from '89 till 1993 and then stored it into a barn never expecting someone ever being interested buying it. Another thing is that i "met" the norton 850 Commando for the first time when i was eleven years old and i'm from '63 ?? is it destiny who will tell . hehe.
Dear richard can you tell me more precisely Dave's e-mail address, so i can add it to my gmail account.
Comparing the fairings-model it has been a genuine British Police-Force Motorcycle , what do you mean with first number ?
I preffered answering you befor clicking the deal link you did send, if i get any further i'll let you know
Manny Regards

Yves, the situation in Belgium is not as straightforward as it was. However, the BFOV may be able to help. Are you flemish-speaking ?

If the bike has been used (officially !) in Belgium up until 1993 then it should be on the DIV files.
In the UK, vehicles retain their registration number when sold, even if that number was first issued to a Police force. There is a possibility that the factory records held by the club for this period will include details of the first registration number and if so, the UK authorities will be able to provide a copy, enabling you to officially import the machine for the first time.
Dave Catton's contact details are in 'Roadholder' magazine.

Becoming a member of the NOC is my best investment ever, I can't never thank you enough for your efforts.

Yves, there are so many separate police forces in the UK that there is very little chance of tracking down a motorcycle without the registration number.
The best advice, if the previous owner will work with you is an official declaration of lost documents. However, I have a certain understanding of the way that many Belgians deal with owning old vehicles and it 's true to say that many of them don't ever have the correct paperwork.
Het zal wel lukken !

Thanks Anna J,
The problem is , that were the VIN plate on the head-stock must be on an Interpol there's the attachment/mechanical bolted Fairing-support which wouldn't hold for a 100 miles if it would be fixed on four VIN-plate rivets, but anyway a huge thank-You for the tip and have a beautyfull spring so you can ride that norton of yours
my regards

Isn't it possible that this Interpol Model was never registered in the UK?
If it was to a foreign government agency directly by the factory it would have no UK registration info.

Till Now everything is possible , Although it was filled in onto the sales-agreement by the previous owner, that the bike was a British Police Force bike. What does the stamped " CM 797 " stands for ???!!!
located on the polyester- front-mudguard's right-hand attachment right-above the and in between the 2 bolt-holes

Hello Yves, welcome to the…
Hello Yves, welcome to the club. I too have been trying to back-track an 850 Commando that came from eBay. I have got as far back as the original address and phone number of the Canadian owner in 1974, long before it came back to the UK. Try looking for additional numbers stamped on the frame, and anything on key-fobs, etc. I have seen an article by someone who collects ex-police bikes, I believe he is a Club member. You could also try UK Customs for an Export Document, quoting the frame number. Best of luck, regards, Paul

This bike is an 850MK2A, they had the engine number stamped on the red 'VIN' plate on the headstock plus another stamped on the frame eg Frame No. #850#F 111 107#. So when looking through the records both Frame No. #850#F 111 107# and 319242 could be used as the frame number. I also have a MK2A and have the red plate with the engine number stamped on it but the V5C has the last 6 digits of the 850F****** as the frame number. Once the MK3 was introduced the engine number was not longer stamped on the red plate but the 850F****** was.

Hi John,
got an e-mail from Marc today, advising me to go to the Belgium Customs for importing the bike, although it has already being imported ???
It is a struggle but the Norton is worth it!!!
I'll let you know how it evolves.
Bigtwinb Thanks anyway

Yves, which country are you in ? Most have a procedure (sometimes slow) for dealing with vehicles without registration papers.
What is the story behind your bike ? Do you know the original UK registration number ? If so , you can apply for duplicates. Most Interpols were sold to UK Police forces and there may be factory records showing which Police force it was supplied to and also the first number. The club officials will probably prefer to deal with this by mail rather than on open forum. I'd suggest an e-mail to Dave Catton, to see what the records show.
