Hello, I'm renewing worn parts of my 1971 gearbox and among other things the mainshaft second gear teeth are pitted so I ordered part number 040418 from a shop. On a dry run build up I found the input and output shafts wouldn't turn freely. A process of elimination of new parts lead to finding the new 2nd gear as the problem. As far as I can gather it looks as if I've been supplied with a later gear denoted by the grooves cut into the dogs. Can anyone please confirm from my photo?

Yes, the one with the groove is the later gear, p/n 06.4640. It must be used with the corresponding layshaft gear p/n 06.4639 (which has a similar groove).

The one on the right (with the groove) is not a genuine gear but an RS copy, and doesn't look that new either.

The pitting I can see on the one on the left is fairly typical and doesn't look too bad, nearly as good as the one on the right. I'd say either buy a new pair from AN or put it back together as it was and don't worry about it - it's not a Honda.

Thanks Stan. In fairness to the shop, it was sold as new but shop soiled, with light surface corrosion but not on the gear teeth and I don't think they have been aware of the gear design changes, just as I wasn't. I'll return the gear and do as you say. And you're right, it's agricultural, not Honda. My collection of reamers has increased.

it's a RSS gear and incorrect material and hardening and of questionable dimensions - DO NOT USE IT.
