Complete strip down?
Are you stripping the engine completely? If you are, the way I removed the half time gear was to heat up the crank case up to remove the main bearing along with the crank shaft and the various parts on that end of the crank.
Then I was able to shift it without the need for a special puller.

main bearing released from crankcase

Got the blow lamp and have removed main bearing from crank case. Its now on the freed up crankshaft. But there seems to be no space behind it to get a puller on it to pull off the bearing complete with half time pinion. Am I missing something here?

Crankshaft oil feed end
Terry,
Not sure where you are getting your advice.. The Norton Twins workshop manual is good.
It advises very strongly you put a tube over the crankshaft end, and to hit that with a hide hammer if necessary to get crank out of crankcase timing side. Belting the crankshaft end with a hammer nearly always swells the crankshaft end and ruins the oil sealing surface.
The manual also advises the proper half time pinion extractor, which I believe is common across lightweight and heavyweight twins.

Why not....
... just buy an extractor from the NOC? You can always sell it on later. And you may find you need to remove the pinion more than once......

Home-Made-Puller-Tool
I made a pinion puller for my Dominator by grinding the heads of three coach bolts to fit the triangular washer. I only needed two bolts in the event.
A drilled alloy plate and Jubilee Clip was used for the holding the bolts in position.
Carefully directed heat was enough to slacken the pinion and allow it to be eased off.
