Ive just purchased a second hand Fastback seat and will recover it as part of my Commando rebuild project.
The cover on the seat has a wide ribbed pattern with pillion strap and looks original, but all the replacement replica seat covers I can find are plain without ribs.
Is there anyone out there with an ORIGINAL Fastback built around Sept 1971 with a ribbed seat?
If it is original does anyone know somebody who can replicate seat covers in the North Midlands area?
I want to rebuild the bike as authentic as possible.
Thanks in advance
Martyn

Possibly an issue needing research …
… depending on one's objectives (originality? comfort? something else?).
The 1971 Fastback I had back in the day had an (undoubtedly original) plain seat (I removed the annoying and useless pillion strap).
Indeed, this is the first suggestion I have ever seen that any Fastback had a ribbed seat.

Fastback Seat
Hi Julian
Thanks for the reply. A friend of mine back in 1973 had a Fastback with a plain seat as I remember trying to stay on the pillion was like holding a bar of wet soap :-)
Yours obviously confirms that. I don't know the origin of the seat I have but the cover is quality, if damaged and may have been hand made.
Assuming I don't get anything to the contrary I will recover with a plain cover.
Thanks for your input.

Fastback seat
I currently own a 1971 Fastback. It had the original seat and cover when I bought it 25 years ago, but it got tatty and had to be recovered (by me using a kit). Both old and new covers were plain with the strap I'm afraid.

Fastback Seat
Hi Stephen
Thanks for confirming Julians input. I'll go with a plain cover given what you've both said.
Thanks again

Seat Covers
In case you don't know them. Had good luck with this firm for a good range of Commando covers. Pretty close to original.

+1 for Leightons
Very friendly and helpful — but not a fan of the Fastback seat, as he told me when doing mine recently …
