Commando Insurance

Forums

Hi All

I know this is not a technical query but I seek the advice of the Wise Heads to be found hereabouts.

Just received renewal quote from Carole Nash for my 72 Commando. Last year 275 quid

this 1968 quid! Bemused doesnt even start to describe my reaction.

Any other insurance outfits you can recommend?

Cheers Nick

... although they pioneered classic bike insurance they've been taken over by the dreaded private equity vultures.

I was with RH who had excellent premiums and no charges for amendments. However, when I had 2 bikes stolen last year, they refused to renew saying I'd made 2 claims. The fact that both bikes were stolen in the same incident seemed to escape them. They did however pay out in full and promptly.

I'm now with Peter James albeit with a much increased premium due to said theft. At around £350 still far cheaper than your £1968. They also do a specic NOC policy.

Hi Ian

Thanks for the info. I figured some kind of Pirate Takeover had happened. Shame as I used to have a positive view of CN but not anymore.

My insurance, with Lynbrook, is just over £200.
That covers a group of 4 bikes, including a 1974 Commando, and a 2000 BMW.

Hi Douglas

Thanks for the info. That does sound like a good deal. I will look into it

Try Peter James (with NOC discount).  335 in London for 5 bikes from 1902 to 1979.  Mysteriously down by 100 from last year.  Possibly they are cutting down on Agreed Values?  They don't say so but does the small print gives them some discretion ...?

Hi Nick

I've just renewed my cover a few days ago with Peter James. Cover for my 650SS and a more modern (2002) Aprilia SL Falco with agreed insurance came to £177, only a £10 increase on the previous year. I left Carole Nash years ago when they were first taken over in view of the big increase in premium.

Just received my renewal note from Carol Nash. Very fair.
Comprehensive.
241 pounds last year
254 pounds this year

Bikes unchanged. Electra and Commander.

Includes UK and European cover and breakdown. European cover up to 90 days. And "At Home" breakdown cover.
Legal expenses up to 100k.

Perhaps Nick, you need to go back to CN.
Is it an age thing? Claim last year?

I'm 74 soon 75 and expect one day my insurer will decide the Commander is a risk too far, and raise the premium.

I'm happy with Footman-James. Helpful and prices seem OK.

My one experience with Peter James/NOC Insurance was unsatisfactory. Despite the fella at the Motorcycle Museum last September being 'confident something could be done', when I called them earlier this year I was told that my, admittedly out of the ordinary, requirement could not be covered. Footman-James took the time to get all the details, ask their brokers and provide what I want.

I also use Footman James, they delivered the goods when I've most needed it and no problem with the many disclosed mods on my Mk3 & Yamaha (RH and Peter James weren't interested...)

Comprehensive UK/ Euro breakdown & recovery, salvage rights, helmets and clothing etc.
Underwritten by the excellent Ageas Insurance who you can deal with directly by phone. Not always about the cheapest price.

I'd advise any classic owner to get the highest possible agreed value, an area FJ offer very good cover, at least in my case. You agree a number you're both happy with and that is what you will get in the case of loss or write off (minus any excess) regardless of current market value.

Insuring for market value not a good idea unless you have a highly valuable model or just want to get on the road, especially now as prices have dropped to realistic levels on many classic bikes and cars.

Just renewed my insurance cover for 4 bikes with agreed values for £184 with RH, slightly cheaper last year when it was £173.
I reduced the agreed values on 3 of the bikes to reflect the current down turn in sale prices of British classics.

... is generally what you would need to pay in order to replace like for like. I take that as being current retail prices and would not reduce my agreed values just yet. For comparison sake I have my Electra at £4,000 the BSA/Suzuki at £3,000 and the recently acquired BSA C11 at £2,000. All would be enough to replace with similar in the event of them disappearing / going up in smoke.
