1928 CS-1 oilpump

Forums

I need to dismantle the dry sump pump on my  engine to replace the reciprocating plunger knob (part  number 4224) from the pump hollow sleeve (part no 4222).

Can someone please explain how to remove the internal retaining screw  (part no 4225) from the plunger  (part number 4223.

Thanks in advance.

they can be very tight. I had the same problem on a pump I acquired for my CS1 and the pin was worn and needed replacing.

If the bronze cam cage 4120 is first removed from the crankcase and then the drive gear 4228 and nut etc removed from the top, the whole hollow sleeve and plunger can be removed from the bottom where the 4277 plug goes in.

I fixed the pump in some soft vice jaws so the base of the hollow sleeve is facing up and soaked it with penetrating oil. Don't apply too much pressure with the vice as the hollow sleeve is thin walled and easy to damage.

I ground a screwdriver so it was a very tight fit in 4225 and used a blowlamp to first heat and then rapid cooling to help loosen things up, combined with a mole wrench on the screwdriver which was eventually successful.

I was considering more drastic action including brute force and ignorance to twist out 4224 (which needed replacing anyway) with the vice in the hope it would loosen up the still-stuck retaining screw. The other alternative of course is to mill the head off retaining screw and then try to drill out the remains. Not easy without risking damaging everything  but probably the last resort !
