The 1961 ES2 I have just bought has the gearbox kickstart shaft with a square shank,not the normal splined one shown in the cutaway diagrams, or as on my other Nortons.
Is this normal?
There is also a lot of wear in the kickstart square hole, is a new one available?
Any help please.

That's what I thought, but it certainly doesn't look like a home job.
I'll strip it further and see what i find.

Sounds like somebody's had a go at it. I believe all Norton gearboxes (heavyweight ones at least) had the same serrated shaft right up to the Commando.
