Thread direction, engine sprocket.

Hi all. Having to take engine sprocket off my 1935 es2 ( primary side). I'm not sure if its right or left hand thread. Bloody tight so didn't want to struggle trying to undo it wrong way. Many thanks.Nick.

Any Norton engine sprocket nuts I have worked with have been right hand thread. I have made a chain wrench using a length of primary chain and an old spark plug spanner with thick wall tube and long extension on the tommy bar. I use that to hold the sprocket while giving a hefty thump to a suitably sized ring spanner on the nut. Whit impact sockets are available so maybe an air driven impact driver would have the same effect.

I recently removed my ES2 engine sprocket by using the 'rope-in-bore' trick. It took two goes because, the first time, I did not feed enough rope in through the plug hole. Amazing.......after watching around 15ft of a 12mm thick towing rope disappear I was able to lock up the piston and then crack the mainshaft nut.

This nut has a right-hand thread so you need to feed the rope in the bore about half way up the firing stroke. After taking off the mainshaft nut I then heated up the sprocket quite a lot before attaching a puller and thumping this with a copper headed mallet.

The whole process is dead easy to do and can be used again when refitting all the bits. It save building fancy gadgets to wrap around the sprocket.
