Clutch

Forums

Clutch started to slip badly when kicking over so I took a look today. Compared the diagram of what the book said a clutch should look like in a Model 18 of 1936 and, courtesy Google, concluded I must have a later AMC clutch; less plates for one thing. Is this change unusual?

However, it looks in good nick and worked fine before it started slipping so I'm fairly confident that with a bit of housekeeping or worst case cash, its grip will be restored.

The clutch in the manual has a sleeve around it to prevent oil getting on the plates but this later one doesn't. Does that mean it needs oil to operate properly? My chaincase leaks like a sieve so I gave up and just use chain lube on the primary. Is this more unwise with a later clutch?
