I amplanning to renew some seals in my 73 gearbox this weekend. I'm taking thegearbox out to do swinging arm/ cradle stuff. I think I have a leak form the sleeve gear bearing seal and I know I have a leak from spindle/quadrant. Am I right in thinking that they can all be done fromthe outside with cases/covers intact. I need to do the two o rings on thespindle bolt and quadrant spindles - looks easy enough(famous last words), but I'm a bitmore concerned about the sleeve gear bearing seal - it can be done this way canit? Any advice appreciated, Rob

Sounds like a good time to strip the box and check layshaft bearings in particular, as well as general condition

I am no expert but have three Comms and have done g'boxs on all.
The selector quadrant does have two seals, but it comes out from the inside, and the seals are on the shaft, I cant see any way of doing that from the outside. Sorry !
As for the sleve gear seal, I presume you mean the driveshaft/sprocket seal ? You will have to remove the sprocket and spacer, and it then says in the manual, "carefully prise the seal out". Would reccomend a small flat blade screwdriver with the end rounded off. I have always failed to see how this seal works as it faces onto the spacer, which is hardly an oiltight seal to the shaft ! Check that you dont have too much oil in the box(measure what comes out ).
