Combat head

Forums

Hi one and all, i have a 750 commando head ,which i was told it was a combat head .It does have a c stamped between the exhaust covers and the head surface is well machined (high compression). The valves look the same size as std and i could stamp any head with a 'c' and shave the head surface ,how can i make sure it is a combat head .Steve

I also have an early 'Combat' head. These were modified from std. low comp heads by machining 040" off the mounting face and opening up the inlet ports to 32mm. Of course anyone with access to a mill and porting tools can do this along with stamping the 'C'. Valves are std size but Norton left out the intake heat insulation washers under the spring seats. 'Combats' had the 2S cam which has a higher lift on the intake than exhaust and just avoided coil bind with these washers in place on the exhaust. So, unless the 'C' stamp can be verified as an original Norton script I'd think it would be hard to determine if the head is genuine.
