Head removal

Forums

Hi Guys,
Can someone help md with a slightly worrying find?
After removing the head, I removed the pushrods and found this mangled washer at the bottom of the pushrod on the far right. On the photo of the pushrod in question, you can see a polished section where the washer has been bouncing around.
Any thoughts on where it has come from?
The engine was running OK before the strip.

Just a guess, but it looks like it could be part of a thackeray washer that goes on the rocker spindle between the rocker and the head.

... a previous owner may have thought it had dropped into that inaccessible corner of the workshop and rather than looking for it just bought a new one. I've done similar myself.....

Ian, you may be right. If these washers are a complete circle with a wave in them, then it looks like there are no other bits left in the engine? See photo

The inner  washer is a smooth shim steel washer without a wave.
The outer is a Thackeray washer (double washer).
Your photo looks like a broken Thackeray washer but there should be the remaining broken piece somewhere inside the head.

With the rocker covers off, I can see all four Thackeray washers, and it looks like one thrust washer missing. I won't be certain until I strip the head. I need to get the sliding hammer tool first.
After flattening the rogue washer out and straightening it up, its definitely the missing thrust washer, so mystery solved. I'm just lucky no damage has been done.
thanks for all the help and advice guys.
