Gear selection

Forums

The bike is a 1972 commando.

I replaced the lay shaft bearing in my gearbox about a year ago as it had failed and at the same time I ordered the full gearbox overhaul kit from AN (06.7279) and index plunger spring.

All the time I’ve had the bike 11 years +, it’s had an issue with jumping out of gear mostly between 2nd & 3rd when accelerating harder than normal and will happen a couple of times during a ride. It will also jump out of first occasionally if I’ve come to a stop and selected neutral and then selected 1st to pull away.

When I had the box apart I did not see any noticeable wear on any gears or selectors but as I’ve not pulled a box apart before I do not know what to expect, the bike has done 27,000 miles.

I was hoping the rebuild would have solved the issue but it has not.

It’s something I can live with but it would be nice to have it working properly.

... is often caused by wear on the dogs meaning that instead of presenting a square face they're slightly tapered. As I understand it, the index plunger and cam wheel only provide the correct position when changing gear and have no effect on keeping any gear engaged.
