heavy clutch action

Calling Commando experts
My Commando riding friend has severe arthritis in his clutch hand. He has tried to lighten the action by using a lined outer cable. The cable centres in the lever housing are the correct 7/8ths. I've heard you can cram another plate into the stack to lighten the action. Is this correct? Does it require a 'special plate' to be ordered, and from whom?

If you replace one of the standard 2mm steel plates with a thicker one:-

It make a difference, it certainly did on mine.

I also modified my sintered bronze plates to look the same as the hi-torque ones:-

That removed any tendency to slip on full load.

Hi Tony
Thanks for the speedy reply and the links to RGM. I looks like a thicker plate should make a significant difference to the action at the handlebar.

Hi Harry, i had a really heavy clutch on my 750 so i bought new 3mm and 4mm plain metal clutch plates from RGM for around £7 each plus vat and postage. If your mate changes an existing 2mm for a 3mm you add 1mm to the stack height or change a 2mm for a 4mm plate that adds 2mm to the stack height. As long as he can just manage to get the clutch together with the diaphragm spring and the large circlip locked in place the clutch height should be perfect. I could not believe how easy it was to pull the clutch in after that. Ian B in your branch has done the same thing on his Commando. If you want to  you can give my phone number to your mate for a chat or to text me if you still have my number. Its a really easy job if he has a clutch spring compresser. Ive got one he can borrow if need be.
