Height from bottom of frame to ground 72 Commando

Forums

Hi another oddball info request.

I want to buy a scissor lift to allow me to work on my 72 Commando. However it has to be able to fit under the bike while on its wheels. I am recovering from abdominal surgery so lifting the bike onto the stand is not going to be possible.

Therefore I need to find a stand whose minimum height will allow it to go under the frame, hence the need to know what that measurement is so I can get the right one.

If you have solved this issue already what should I get?

Cheers Nick

Nick; any idea of passing a lift under the machine is a bit odd. You would get to the stand then you have lost the clearance the other end.  There are small service lifts to take the weight off the wheels but the machine is still in a low level position.

i guess it depends on what tasks you are going to undertake, cleaning, repair , replacement parts. If it's just height you need have someone make up a fixed table to run the machine up on.

I have a hydraulic "Elev8" which measures 80mm closed. It comes with a detachable ramp plate, wheel stop and tool trays.  They come in 350 and 500mm width. They are not cheap but neat and reliable. Often seen them in BMW workshops. I would suggest someone else gets the machine up on to the table, sets it on the stand, attach security straps and you have the machine at any level to suit the task.  Tools parts and fluids all on one level.

Let us know your intentions and you will get more relevant suggestions.

Whatever you do be careful until you are fit again.

Hi Jon,

The intention is to lift the bike to make it easier to work on the primary drive side as I am fitting an Alton starter. If it is on the centre stand it is very uncomfortable. It does not need to be very high just waist height at most.

If I cant get it under the bike to begin with I cant start to lift it. A friend of mine bought a scissor lift for this same purpose but couldnt use it because it would not fit under the bike. I want to avoid that

Cheers Nick

Will be key during this change to your machine. You would also not want the lift mechanism in the middle of the machine as it could obstruct access to the primary.

My preference would be to get it up on a table at your preferred height. Secure the front wheel and strap the rear of machine securely. A lot of high torque / effort would be involved in fitting the starter so the machine has to be very stable.  Again, take care, better still, get a mate involved.
cheers

A cheap alternative if your garage/shed has a suitable beam is to use a £20 block & tackle hoist to lift the beast, then slide a homemade wooden bench underneath.

Make sure you know what height you want to work at and take it from there.
Take a look at these on eBay
"Sealey MC4500 Motorcycle & Quad Scissor Lift 500kg Capacity Hydraulic"
I bought one for my Matchless twin which is close to the same height as my Commando.
I'd have bought another scissor lift but space is at a premium already.
Other outlets have them as well which is what I went for, same make lower price.
