Amal StayUp Floats??

Forums

I'm assisting a friend ('74 850) who has messed around with his fuel levels and new floats to the point where he is totally lost. Could someone advise on this adjustment as to whether the Burlen instructions setting fuel level with the float bowls off the bike will achieve a proper level when installed on bike?

My experience with stay-up floats on my T150 was that Burlens' instructions get you in the right field, that's all. Some bikes are more fussy about fuel levels than others. In the end, the only way was the old routine of a clear tube rig from a float bowl drain and see where the fuel ends up, then adjust accordingly. I set mine off the bike so the fuel level was around 5 mm below the top of the fuel bowl. Drained off and tried it twice to be sure, runs a treat, except the thing's way too big and heavy for this old guy !

Regards all, Terry.

My Premier StayUp floats were virtually parallel to the bowl top flange as delivered I found a slight tilt down at the front is the best setting to prevent leaking and still give the optimum fuel level on my Commando.

This prevents possible float contact with the upper carb casting and won,t overflow if I forget to turn the fuel tap off between rides. Just make sure both are set the same and the stainless float arms don,t touch the bowl edges as they swivel. This is easy to check by holding the carbs level and filling both bowls.

I find setting the floats relative to the bowl top flange off the bike is the most effective method of setting StayUps. Using a tube gauge needs the carbs level from left to right for an accurate reading. Fine tuning can then be done via the needles, idle screws etc.

....did you set them initially with the bowls off the carbs and level?

Yes, stainless 2BA socket cap screws with short and long ball allen keys make it easier to remove and fit the bowls than Phillips. Handy for float setting and synching the slide lifts too.

A good tip is to make sure the pivot shaft is tight in the slots so it doesn,t move when you press lightly down on the stainless tab to check the StayUp height.

Once the floats are set and don,t leak you shouldn,t need to touch them again for miles and miles and miles, but everything else may need adjusting or replacing...

Here are some pix of the same type of setup on my older Premiers. I have a better side shot of both floats at their correct heights but can,t find it at present

Supposedly because they,re made from a petrol/ethanol proof, closed cell foam and don,t sink like the awful plastic things used before. One of my original Concentric floats was the cause of poor running, found fuel swilling around inside from a barely visible split. Superglue is fuel proof so sealed it with that until my new Premiers arrived.

I once trimmed the top of a StayUp float to try and raise the fuel level. It didn,t absorb petrol at all but in the end not needed as the standard height mentioned and re jetting did the trick.
