Kegler Clamps

Forums

I am wondering what the general opinion is regarding Kegler Clamps. I have found that these seem to be available in the USA but cannot see a supplier in the UK. Are they not deemed to be an acceptable modification? If they are, is there a UK supplier? I would be interested to hear the views of any members who have them fitted.

Saves you the work of disassembly to do this - offers a way to take up any wear in swing(ing) arm trunnion. Nuts will be welded to tube.

If anyone elects this method (welding on nuts ) be certain to only tack nuts in place and remove cap screws before completing welds - I did not and was fortunate to be able to remove said screws as shrinkage had occurred after welding . Re tap nuts/ tube after welding is complete.

Trying to answer the other parts of your question...

Are they not deemed to be an acceptable modification?

I guess it depends who is doing the 'deeming'. I reckon they are a useful mod for tightening up the swinging arm. This is a known weak point on most Commando models.  This is referred to in the INOA Tech Digest.  Commandos are not exactly a rare bike and mods that keep them on the road easily are certainly ok imho. Some solve the problem by fitting the later Mk3 swinging arm with the cotter pins.

If funds are a bit tight it's possible to modify a split shaft collar (1-1/8" ID) by tapping a thread and adding a short bolt. This is the approach I took with my 1972 750 Roadster. I got the clamp from Tasman Industries who stock imperial sizes.

Definitely improved things and fairly easy to fit to the bike. Just had to remove the rear wheel to gain access.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies, some interesting stuff there. I was thinking of putting this job on my winter project list.
