Amal 276AE/1BE thread repair

Forums

Hi Everyone,

I need some advice please.

I am nearing the end of restoring of a 1943 16H and while stripping the original carb (Amal 276AE/1BE) I have found the threads on bottom of the main mixing chamber body, where the union nut attaches for the float chamber are badly worn that they don't thread anymore!

Anyway, I have tried to look for a replacement body, but I don't seem to be able to find one at a reasonable price that does not include buying the whole setup for 300 squid?!?!?

Is there a way to repair the threads (as it the original carb) or does anyone have a replacement 276AE body that I could purchase?

Thanks as always

Nigel

There is an NOS body on eBay at the moment for £60. That's top of the price range in my opinion as they can be found cheaper, but if you want one quickly or don't fancy autojumbling...

Best person to ask if yours is reclaimable is Martyn Bratby.

I've sent you a Personal Message.

Hi Rich, Many thanks for your help mate. That does seem some what pricy and I am not sure the threads are much different to mine. I will keep looking.

Also I am trying to id the different letters after the 276 that would be the same to use as the AE? any ideas? I have the Amal spare part list and am I right to think it is only the bike make and model.....its all a little confusing!

Under the original Amal numbering system, both mixing chamber as a spare and the complete instrument were listed as the 276/011. They changed the system around 1941 and it was listed as a 276A/1DJ (1DJ being the float chamber) and then later in the year it became the 276AE/1BE with the bare mixing chamber as spare part marked 276/406...

As if this wasn't enough, post-war this was fitted with the cold start tickover device and became the 276AT/1BE with the bare body being the 276/408V - The 'V' being the 'Veloce Type' cold start device... I'm not aware of any other 1" stub fitting bodies which can fit the 16H and bear in mind that nearly all makes other than Norton were fitted with a 276 'R' suffix which had a different pilot air system so you probably won't be able to simply swap jet blocks.

£60 is expensive - given a year and a monthly visit to a jumble, I reckon you could find an NOS body for £30 to £35...but it will have cost you a lot more in fuel, tea and dodgy burgers ! :-)

Thanks for the explanation.

I am so pleased that some one can explain the numbering systems. So I am looking for a 276/011, 276A, 276AE or 276/406 as a replacement.Got it!

Ha ha...you may well be right about the cost, but it would be much more fun, although I would most likely end up bringing home more projects as well ;-)

Many thanks for your time and help Rich, it is much appreciated.
