Will it fit ?

Forums

Hi everyone,

Probably two stupid questions someone might be good enough to answer, sorry for my ignorance.

Can I have 600 cc liners fitted to my worn out 500 cc barrels ?

Can I fit a later AMC clutch with my laydown gearbox ?

Many thanks Keith

Hello Keith,

Is this a trick question, or should it be, will my 500 barrels bore out to std 600?

Unfortunately, this is a trick answer because I have no idea BUT SOMEONE OUT THERE WILL.

Hi Keith

You can fit the 600 liners but you will end up with a 550cc engine. You might also have to trim a little off the bottom of the liners as the 88m barrel was shorter than the 99 one.

You also get the same numbers if you bore out an 88 barrel to +80 thou. At which point standard 99 pistons and rings will fit the bore.

Don't forget to get the crankshaft rebalanced if you go down either of these routes.

Hello Keith,

I am struggling, from the start, with the logic in your question. If you are prepared to spend the not inconsiderable sum of having your barrels sleeved why would you go for a 600 liner? Surely you should get back to standard 500cc with the correct liner, unless your barrels are already bored out to more than the O/D of a 500 liner, possible but a bit unlikely. You would also avoid the associated problems.

Hi, Thanks for the information just trying to build a 600 engine out of a box of random parts, including 600 crank and cases, 500 barrels.

Hi, Thanks for the information just trying to build a 600 engine out of a box of random parts, including 600 crank and cases, 500 barrels.

-------------------------------------

Remember that the 99 barrel is taller than the 88 barrel. It also useslonger pushrods.

It will fit on the 88 crankcases and you can run it with 99 pistons insideplus an88 crankshaft and rodsbut the compression ratio will be very, very low.

Alternatively you can use the 88 crankcases with the 99 barrelsand a99 crankshaftplus 99 conrods. You will actually have a 99 engine with 122 (model 88) marked on the cases.

Finally, for those who do like a real challenge - try 88 crankcases with the 88 crankshaft. Go for the 99 conrods, barrels and pistons, a very hefty head gasket and when the motor is ready to start get someone else to kick it over!!!
